Via the OSGeo-Discuss list, I learned about the announcement of mod_geocache, an Apache tiling module.
From the official site: "mod-geocache is an open source apache module written in C with a permissive license that aims to implement a subset of the features offered by existing tile caching solutions. The primary objective is to be fast, while offering the essential features expected from a tile caching solution. [...] features:
- supports WMS requests (TMS and WMTS support coming)
- supports WMS backends
- supports metatiling
- supports on-the-fly tile merging "
There's a lot of options for tile caching now: TileCache, GeoWebCache and certainly others I'm forgetting at the moment.
