Location-based apps ultimately will have to form the foundations for next-gen mobile ad and commerce apps. A missing element to making this a reality is the concept of standards to allow for auditable results, proliferation of hardware that will enable inexpensive and easily accessible merchant deployments, interop across many devices, etc. I go into some detail on this subject here - http://www.slideshare.net/peburn...
