The Billion-Dollar Startup That Almost Never Was

Airbnb founders

Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia are living large these days.

Their rent-apartments-instead-of-hotel-rooms company, AirBNB, raised a $100 million round last month and is valued at $1 billion.

Entrepreneurship wasn't always easy for these successful founders though. In fact, they were on the verge of shutting down completely before their startup had a chance to take off.

Justin.TV founder Justin Kan recalls meeting the founders in 2008 when they were down in the dumps. They had tried multiple times to get traction for AirBNB but to no avail. AirBNB farmed Craigslist for users and "launched" at three different conferences including SXSW and the Democratic National Convention.

Each promotion brought fleeting traffic surges of one-time visitors.

"By fall, almost anyone could have justified throwing in the towel," Kan says. "They had tried to make the product work multiple times, had accumulated tens of thousands in personal credit card debt, and were literally printing cereal boxes to try to make money. Even their lead (and only) engineer had moved back to Boston."

Their big break came when they were accepted into Y Combinator later that year.

Two years later, they're arguably the most valuable Y Combinator company and are the "darling of west coast startups."

Not all startups have such happy endings though. General Assembly's founders had all of the makings of a successful first venture in college but they let it slip through their fingers.

Here's how their startup had millions in funding and 100,000 users -- and STILL failed >>

Facebook's iPad App Is Almost Ready To Go (AAPL)

Zuckerberg holds iPad

More than a year after Apple introduced the iPad, Facebook is finally getting around to releasing an app for it.

Nick Bilton at the New York Times reports that the app has been in development for almost a year, with Mark Zuckerberg taking a personal interest in its design.

The Chat and Groups features have apparently been tweaked for the iPad, and it users will be able to upload photos and videos from the iPad's camera directly to Facebook.

It all sounds very similar to the Facebook app for Android tablets -- and the Facebook iPhone app, for that matter -- but it's nice to see this glaring gap finally filled.

Bilton also reports that Facebook is redesigning its Web site for the iPad as well.

That redesigned Web site might be part of Facebook's reported plan to redesign itself as a full Web-based mobile platform, where users can download other apps, buy items with Facebook Credits, and so on.

Facebook is also reportedly getting some sort of new photo-sharing feature as well. Looks like a busy summer down in Palo Alto.

Microsoft-Nokia Deal Almost Blown Because Of Bad Weather (MSFT, NOK, GOOG)

German Airport

Steve Ballmer tried to fly to Helsinki in January to finalize a deal to put Microsoft software on Nokia phones, but bad weather almost killed the deal, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Microsoft began talking with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop in November, a mere month after he left his job leading Microsoft's business software division.

Elop also talked to Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Android head Andy Rubin about using Android. As negotiations unfolded, Nokia grew worried that Microsoft was treating it like just another handset partner instead of the biggest phone maker in the world -- and owner of the market-leading (for now) Symbian smartphone platform.

So in January, Ballmer wanted to fly to Nokia headquarters to show how serious Microsoft was and to seal the deal.

But his private plane couldn't land in Helsinki because of snow and fog, so Ballmer ended up in Stockholm, Sweden, where he caught a commercial flight to Helsinki. His cover was almost blown in the airport when a loudspeaker paged Ballmer by name because of a problem with the ticket.

Evidently the personal touch worked, and the negotiations ended in Microsoft's favor.

CHART OF THE DAY: Just Like That, The iPad Is Almost As Big As The Mac (AAPL)

Apple's iPad business has only been around for 9 months, but it has already generated almost $10 billion in revenue for Apple.

Specifically, Apple shipped 14.8 million iPads last year, generating $9.6 billion in revenue. Last quarter alone, it shipped 7.3 million iPads for $4.6 billion in sales.

That's amazing. And what's more amazing is that it's almost the same amount of revenue as Apple's almost-27-year-old Mac business, which just put in its best quarter ever, generating $5.4 billion in revenue.

But perhaps what's most remarkable is how fast Apple is still growing overall. At $26.7 billion in sales last quarter, Apple still grew 71% year-over-year. Crazy.
