New Wifi Tech Could Double Your Phone’s Battery Life

If you ever get the sense that someone on the wifi network you're using is hogging all the juice, you may be right. Not only does sharing wifi with others downloading large files interfere with your enjoyment of the latest viral video, but it can majorly drain your battery as well. A new solution from a Duke University computer science graduate student could alleviate your frustrations and as much as double your battery life by allowing your wifi device to "nap" until more bandwidth is available. This means you might have to wait a few minutes, but that could be a productivity boon anyway.

BlackBerry Playbook Has Terrible Battery Life, Says Analyst (RIMM, AAPL)

rim blackberry playbook

The launch of Research In Motion's BlackBerry Playbook tablet is being pushed back to the May quarter, thanks to crappy battery life, says Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu.

Wu says in a note picked up at All Things D he is hearing from sources the battery on the PlayBook only lasts a few hours. Since the iPad does ten hours, this is devastating news for RIM, if true. (One gossipy source talking to Wu isn't exactly gospel.)

Wu says in his note, "Keep in mind that QNX (the OS on which PlayBook runs) wasn’t originally designed for mobile environments but rather for devices like network equipment and automobiles where battery life isn’t as much a constraint."

John Paczkowski at ATD says RIM will have to slap on a bigger battery, making the tablet heavier, if this is true.

World's Smallest Battery Created

Zothecula writes "Because battery technology hasn't developed as quickly as the electronic devices they power, a greater and greater percentage of the volume of these devices is taken up by the batteries needed to keep them running. Now a team of researchers working at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies has created the world's smallest battery. 'It consists of a bulk lithium cobalt cathode three millimeters long, an ionic liquid electrolyte, and has as its anode a single tin oxide (Sn02) nanowire 10 nanometers long and 100 nanometers in diameter.' (Abstract in Science.) Although the tiny battery won't be powering next year's mobile phones, it has already provided insights into how batteries work and should enable the development of smaller and more efficient batteries in the future."

Comment on Flash: Sucking the Life Out of Your MacBook Air Battery by Mickey Segal

It is not very meaningful to compare Flash videos to static images. The proper comparison is to compare Flash video to other video technologies. If Flash video drains the battery in comparison to other video technologies that would be meaningful.
