The Color Of Your Website Has A Huge Impact On What People Buy

Paint

Most entrepreneurs think about the color of their site in terms of how colors look together and whether they’re generally appealing, but color actually has a lot more to do with what your visitors think about your site – and the actions they take – than you might realize.

There have been entire books written about the psychology of color in buying habits. It’s a topic that has been well studied, and most marketing degrees include at least some study of this topic. We don’t want to bore you with psychology talk though. So here are the basics of what various colors mean, who they appeal to, and who should use them.

First, a Few Stats

Some of these statistics have to do with the color of individual products, but they demonstrate very clearly the power color has in the minds of consumers. According to a recent KISSMetrics report:

  • 93% of consumers place color and appearance above other factors when making a buying decision.
  • 85% of shoppers state color as the primary factor in their decision to buy a product.
  • Brand recognition, which links directly to consumer confidence, is increased by 80% when the right colors are used.

What Does it Mean?

It’s important to know what specific colors mean to people. It’s been shown that certain colors invoke specific feelings in most people, so let’s see what colors really mean.

Yellow: Youthful and optimistic. Use it to grab attention. Usually not good as a background or primary site color.

Red: Energy. Creates urgency and increases heart rate. Good for appealing to impulse shoppers.

Blue: Creates feelings of trust and security. This is why many banks use it in their logos or marketing. Navy or dark blue  is used to market to the budget-conscious.

Green: Gives the impression of wealth. Relaxing and easy-going. Teal can be used to appeal to people on a budget.

Orange: Aggressive and excitement. Good for calls to action and impulse buying.

Pink: Feminine and romantic. Used to market to women and girls and traditional buyers.

Black: Powerful and sleek. Use it to market luxury products and appeal to impulse buyers.\

Purple: Soothing and calming. Often used to market anti-aging products.

Part of the study mentioned above found that what your site visitors see when they come to your site, from overall design to the colors used, really does make an impact on whether they buy from you. In fact, 52% of people surveyed who said they would not return to a site stated the reason as ‘aesthetics.’ If there was ever any question, that should confirm that the look of your site is one of the most important parts of your business.

Why It Would Be Good If Color Failed

I have great respect and admiration for all entrepreneurs out there including the Color founders. I have seen the videos and read the interviews. In theory, Color sounds cool, its founders seem to be knowing what they are talking about and those investors that sunk 50 million into the startup can’t be crazy either.

Still, I hope that one of these days I wake up and Color has just disappeared.

I thought about that this last Saturday while I was out having dinner. Several people I know also had dinner at the restaurant where I was and I’m sure several of them took a few photos. I also know that nobody used Color.

If you're a proud Nook Color owner, you now have one more thing to be proud of.

With the help of Dropbox and a modified Flash player, you can now watch as much Hulu as you'd like on your Nook Color.

Hulu has tried time and time again to prevent tablet users from accessing Hulu content on the go, but hackers keep finding ways around the various walls Hulu is putting up.

The Nook Color Makes A Weak Android Tablet, But Your Mom Will Love It [REVIEW] (BKS)

nook color android apps

Despite a few initial glitches, the Nook Color update that went live on Monday, effectively turns the e-reader into a fully-functional Android tablet.

Not bad for $250.

But despite the sweet price, don't expect the same performance or experience as you would from the more powerful Android tablets like the Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab. The Nook's relatively weak processor (800 MHz) has some difficulty keeping up with the operating system.

That being said, the Nook Color is still a great option for casual users. The first thing I thought after spending some time with it was "I bet my mom would love this."

If you only plan on doing simple web browsing, emailing, or gaming, the Nook Color may be a good choice for you.

Here's what I thought:

  • When you first install the update, don't expect your typical Android layout. This is still a Nook, and it runs a heavily-modified version of Android 2.2. You probably won't even notice much has changed at first.
  • The screen isn't as bright as the iPad or Xoom's but it does make it easier to use outdoors. Touch responsiveness is satisfactory, but not as good as other tablets I've used.
  • The new web browser is a bit slow. Scrolling through web pages can be jerky, but I love that Barnes & Noble included Flash support. Videos look great.
  • The email app is nothing flashy, but it gets the job done. I like that there aren't any complicated settings. Just log in with your Gmail or other account and the Nook handles the rest.
  • The app selection is surprisingly good, considering you don't have access to the full Android Market. The average user will find everything he or she needs like RSS readers and casual games.
  • I had some problems with rich games like Angry Birds. Animation stuttered, and Angry Birds completely froze the Nook one time when I tried playing it.
  • The standard, preloaded apps work well. You get a media player, email, and Pandora right out of the box.

Again, this tablet isn't a powerhouse, and it shows in how it handles apps and web browsing. It's hardly a substitute for most tablets out there. But at half the price of the cheapest iPad, I think it's still a good option for casual users.

You can arrange apps any way you want on your home screen. They don't automatically lock into place, so its a bit awkward to line them up.

Here's a view of the bottom. There's a micro USB port and the "Nook Button" that returns you to the home screen.

There's a headphone jack at the top. Great for watching web videos in the browser.
