Facebook Is Nowhere In Japan

japanese teens street fashion

One of the few countries where Facebook is really struggling is Japan. The Times has a good rundown of the company's struggles there.

The main culprit? Privacy.

The Japanese are avid users of social networking, even mobile social networking, but always with usernames and avatars. Meanwhile Facebook in Japan, like everywhere else, favors real names, real pictures and real connections.

In a survey, 89 percent (!) of Japanese internet users have said they are wary of using their internet names online. Japanese social networks like Mixi and Gree (and, adding insult to injury, American rival Twitter) are huge there but Facebook is barely growing.

Facebook is really sticking to its strategy of emphasizing real names though, which is maybe the best strategy long-term. Facebook does have extensive privacy controls, although it seems the market isn't yet educated on that (heck, social networking users everywhere seem to be uneducated about privacy settings). In India, after struggling for years, Facebook has become dominant thanks to exchange students and other returning travelers who got hooked to the site overseas, and the same thing might happen there.

Google Lat Long Blog: Refining the Google Maps tiles for Japan

Today the Google Maps team is excited to announce that we are releasing a number of improvements to the look and feel of the map for Japan. This redesign is intended to provide our users with an easier to read and more beautiful map, and to help them find the geographic information they want more quickly.

We’ve given a lot of thought to the visuals used to present the multi-faceted information on the Japanese maps, and have arrived at a refined set of style updates for the typography, iconography, colors and line styles.

Apple Bringing iAds To Japan With Ad Giant Dentsu (AAPL, GOOG)

Japan phone girlApple is teaming up with Dentsu Group, the huge Japan ad agency, to bring Apple's iAd mobile advertising service to Japan.

Apple will host, target, and deliver the ads, while Dentsu will be responsible for sales and "creative execution." (We don't know if it will be the ONLY company that can make iAd creative, or if it will work with other agencies. We'll ask.)

In a canned quote, Apple iAd boss Andy Miller says Apple has "already doubled the number of brands in the network."

Not yet announced by Apple: When it will offer its iAd SDK for other agencies to use to make iAds. Agencies, who are used to controlling the entire ad process, have been annoyed by Apple's tight control over the iAd so far. Last month, we reported scuttlebutt that Adidas had pulled out of the iAd program after Apple rejected its ad creative for the third time.
