The Biggest Announcements Microsoft Made Today About The Future Of Xbox (MSFT)

kudo tsunoda

Microsoft's keynote at E3 today was largely about Kinect, and it's no wonder why.

Microsoft's motion capture controller called Xbox Kinect has propelled Xbox sales ahead of every competitor, and has made the Xbox 360 even more of a family friendly gaming platform.

Among other announcements, Microsoft announced some new features for Xbox 360 including Kinect Star Wars (as close as you can get to swinging a light saber), cloud storage for game saves and profiles, and voice control that pervades the entire Xbox experience.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the coolest game we've seen in a long time. New York City is under attack. You have to watch this video to believe how intense this game is.

Kinect Fun Labs imports a 3D version of yourself

"Kinect Fun Labs" brings the latest Kinect gadgets and tech to your Xbox Live dashboard.

One cool thing we saw today was a cool feature that lets you scan yourself into the game instead of picking clothes and features for your avatar.

Kinect will recognize your hair, eyes, nose, mouth, and clothing, and put you in the game in 3D.

Voice control will be tied in to the entire Xbox experience

From games to search, voice control will play a big part going forward.

Microsoft demoed searching for movies, games, and tv shows using only your voice.

Microsoft Talking To Networks About TV On Xbox (MSFT)

Xbox 360 Kinect kids

Microsoft is talking to networks about licensing TV content for the Xbox 360, according to a report today in AdAge.

But apparently the move is being debated by Microsoft execs -- some think that providing TV via the Xbox would cost too much and wouldn't sell many additional Xboxes.

Given Microsoft's long history of failure in the TV market, it's easy to see why execs are nervous about this latest effort. Google and Apple have also released interactive TV products, but neither has sold well.

Still, if Microsoft used the Xbox to enter the TV market, it would immediately become a huge player: there are more than 30 million Xbox 360 users, and they already spend 40% of their time watching video from Netflix and other sources.

Whatever it ends up doing, it's clear that Microsoft is considering new approaches to TV and video. Reuters first reported Microsoft's talks with TV providers last fall, and earlier this year the company put longtime hardware head Tom Gibbons in charge of its interactive TV business.

Xbox Modding Trial Dismissed

It seems the harsh words from District Court Judge Philip Gutierrez on Wednesday had their intended effect; prosecutors in Matthew Crippen's Xbox modding case have now dismissed the indictment. Quoting Wired: "Witness No. 1, Tony Rosario, was an undercover agent with the Entertainment Software Association. He told jurors Wednesday that he paid Crippen $60 in 2008 to modify an Xbox, and secretly videotaped the operation. Rosario had responded to Crippen’s advertisement on the internet and met Crippen at his Anaheim house. All of that had been laid out in pretrial motions. But during his testimony, Rosario also said Crippen inserted a pirated video game into the console to verify that the hack worked. That was a new detail that helped the government meet an obligation imposed by the judge that very morning, when Gutierrez ruled that the government had to prove Crippen knew he was breaking the law by modding Xboxes. But nowhere in Rosario’s reports or sworn declarations was it mentioned that Crippen put a pirated game into the console. ... [Prosecutor Allen Chiu] conceded he never forwarded that information to the defense."

Already selling 1 million units in 10 days, Microsoft's Xbox Kinect controller is a hit. I can see why; it's intuitive, fun, and it finally gives parents like me a chance to beat the kids in a video game, even if I look stupid doing it.
