iPhone AppsAAPL Down Against The Market

Stocks are jumping after French President Nicolas Sarkozy hinted at a deal to resolve the Greek debt crisis that has hampered equities and worried investors. Shares of AAPL, however, are down nearly 1%.  Catalysts include second quarter results released in July; the next iPhone launch this fall (see below); smartphone push into China and emerging markets; iCloud rollout and adoption; the continued evolution and next generation of Apple TV; and new platforms such as books / publishing and social (Ping). Shares of Apple trade at 10.8x Enterprise Value / Trailing Twelve Months Free Cash Flow (including long-term marketable securities).

iPhone Leads On Millennial Media Mobile Ad Network, But Android Crushes It On A Platform Basis (TUAW)

The iPhone is the top individual phone on Millennial Media's mobile ad network in May, while the iPad is on the rise with a 29% jump in impressions. On a platform basis, Android was the leading smartphone OS with a 53% impression share, while iOS was a distant second with a 27% impression share. Ad revenue from apps paints a different picture than the impressions data. In ad revenue, iOS and Android are neck and neck. iOS had a slight lead with 45% share, while Android had a 43% share. That will likely change soon.

The Secrets Of Apple's Retail Success (TUAW)

Apple's retail stores have grown into a multi-million dollar business due to its strict employee guidelines and thoughtful attention to minute details, like the music used on demo machines. What's the secret sauce? An emphasis on customer satisfaction:
  • Approach customers with a personalized warm welcome.
  • Probe politely to understand all the customer's needs.
  • Present a solution for the customer to take home today.
  • Listen for and resolve any issues or concerns.
  • End with a fond farewell and an invitation to return.

Probably that's why the employees are unionizing.

Next iPhone Could Feature New LED Camera Flash (AppleInsider)

Apple's next-generation iPhone could feature a new LED camera flash module from a different manufacturer. The company is said to have "greatly reduced" orders of Philips LED flash components in the last one to two months. It could be a sign Philips isn't being used for the next iPhone, or at least not as-is.

Apple Looks To Sweden For Next Store (TUAW)

Apple has set its sights on Stockholm for a new Apple store. Clearly, not withstanding the announced departure this week of Apple's retail chief, the company's highly aggressive global retail strategy won't be impeded in the least by the changing of the guard in Apple's retail sector. Nokia's stomping grounds (or close).

App Income To Exceed Music Income In The Next 3 Years (Asymco)

According to an interesting analysis by Asymco, iOS app revenue should zoom past song sales by 2015. iOS developers and record labels together have pulled some $16.6 billion in cumulative revenues on Apple's iTunes content store since its inception: $2.5 billion to app developers and about $14 billion to music companies.

MacBook Air Might Earn Apple $3 Billion Annually (AppleInsider)

Apple is poised to realize a $3 billion opportunity with its line of MacBook Air computers as "break-out" growth of the portables continues. Mark Moskowitz of J.P. Morgan revised his April estimates of a $2.2 billion a year revenue stream upward to reach the $3 billion figure.

Facebook Wants To Bring Down Apples App Store (Various via iDygest)

Facebook is hoping to bring its app platform to mobile through a massive effort targeting iOS users. Project Spartan would bring the social network's apps to mobile Safari through an HTML5 wrapper that would replicate some of Facebook itself, such as Credits. However, rather than releasing software through the App Store, Facebook is supposedly pushing for browser-based apps and services (a la Google).

Apple Will Make More Money On Apps Than Music In Three Years (AAPL)

The App Store will overtake the iTunes Music Store in monthly income for Apple in the next three years, estimates Horace Dediu at Asymco after analyzing the data on each.

Below you can see his chart of the estimates. The app sales are growing at much greater rate than music sales.

Another interesting tidbit that came out of the report is that, on average, iOS users download 60 apps for their devices. The number is tracked by how many apps are purchased per iTunes account, and the number is increasingly sharply month to month.

baby ipadAAPL Sliding In Weak Tech Tape

The NASDAQ has eased off of its gains in early trading, but the broader market has built on its opening bounce. Shares of AAPL are off nearly 1% as the stock continues to slide into next week's earnings report. Upcoming catalysts for the stock include results of its second fiscal quarter on Wednesday, April 20 at 5:00 p.m ET; any update regarding Steve Jobs' healthy return; the WWDC starting June 6; monthly NPD data to gauge Mac / iPod businesses; iPad 2 sales updates;  iPhone sales updates, the push in China, as well as the launch of the iPhone 5 (whenever that may be); new revenue streams such as video, books / publishing and social (Ping); moving iTunes into the cloud; and the continued evolution and adoption of Apple TV. Shares of Apple trade at 13x Enterprise Value / Trailing Twelve Months Free Cash Flow (incl. long-term marketable securities).

The iPad Will Dominate Through 2015 Says Gartner (Bloomberg)
The iPad will continue to dominate the market for tablet computers, controlling more than three-fifths of the market next year, according to technology research firm Gartner. Apple’s iOS platform, which powers its iPhone and iPad devices, will account for 69% of the market this year and 64% in 2012. Apple’s share will decline to 47% in 2015, according to the report today.

Tablets (Meaning The iPad) Are Stealing People Away From Other Devices (CNet)
Tablets may be starting to steal people away from their laptops, desktops, and even televisions, according to a survey of ~1,400 respondents released this week by Google's AdMob. The survey breaks down how people are using their tablets, which in most cases so far, means the iPad. Shopping online occupied the lowest percentage among specifically polled options, with only 42% of respondents confirming they used their tablets to buy from the internet.

Is Apple Spending Enough On Research And Development? (Seeking Alpha)
The company may become “the next Polaroid,” the camera/film company that lost its way as quick film processing and digital technology emerged to replace instant film. Apple’s research and development budget is a comparatively low percentage of revenues at 3%. Most tech houses, like Intel, Intel forever spend over 10% on R&D. With $60 billion in liquidity, the company could easily crank up research and development. What it's already spent has seemed to work out quite well so far.

Analyst Says Petabyte Buy Dovetails With Cloud-Based iTunes (Barron's)
Barclays Capital's Ben Reitzes commented on Apple's purchase of 12 petabytes worth of storage equipment from Isilon Systems (EMC). It prompted speculation regarding expected cloud-based services.  Reitzes says that such huge amounts of data "dovetail nicely" with a Cloud Tunes an online version of Apple's popular iTunes.

The iPhone 5 May Well Be On Track For A Summer Release (AppleInsider)
The iPhone 5 might not be delayed at all. The newest version of iPhone may well be on track for a June-July release, according to Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities. As rumors of a later-than-usual iPhone launch for 2011 persist, a new report reveals that the notoriously secretive Apple is being even more careful than usual when dealing with overseas suppliers. Hiring Spree: Apple Hires Top Execs For Gaming Platform (AppleInsider)
Apple just poached two top industry PR execs to help further push iOS as a major gaming platform. Nick Grange, who departs his role at Activision as the studio's European PR director, will be focused on iPad hardware and former Nintendo UK head of communications Robert Saunders will leave his position at the end of April for a "newly created role at Apple". Apple's strategy appears to be paying off; smartphone gaming has risen to 44% of the mobile gaming market, while the number of games played on the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP has fallen by 13%.

Woz Said He Would Consider Coming Back To Apple If Asked (VentureBeat)
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said that he would consider returning to an active role at the company he helped start if asked. However that statement, which came out during an interview, comes with some strings attached, specifically about the openness of the company's products. It seems unlikely, since Apple could have asked him back a long time ago.

Third Yahoo M&A; Boss Quits In Two Years (YHOO)

carol bartz

Yahoo's head of M&A, Taylor Barada, is leaving for Zynga, Kara Swisher at All Things D reports.

This is the second head of M&A Yahoo has lost in the last year. Previously, Andrew Siegel left Yahoo to move back to his family in New York and work for Conde Nast parent company Advance Publications.

Prior to Siegel, Yahoo's M&A boss was Greg Mrva. He left in the fall of 2009.

Leading M&A at Yahoo isn't the best job in the world right now. It can't spend big bucks on sexy acquisitions, and it has trouble convincing companies to join Yahoo.

For instance, Yahoo couldn't close the deal on buying Foursquare last year. It also rejected by Groupon after making a low ball offer.

On the plus side ... Yahoo is about to dump Yahoo Japan, so it might have a pile of cash to play with for whoever takes over the M&A gig.
