Gulf Coast tourism was hit hard by last April's BP oil spill. Hotel cancellations
spiked as vacations were put on hold. But last Saturday nearly 4,000 volunteers walked Florida's 825 miles of coastline to prove that months after the spill, their beaches are oil-free, and they want you to come "share a little sunshine" with them.
The Great Visit Florida Beach Walk rallied local Floridians and visitors to take real-time photos of the current beach conditions across the state. Beginning at sunrise and over the course of the day, more than 4,600 photos were shot and uploaded to the Visit Florida website, organized by mile marker. The celebration didn't just include photography. A seaside wedding, sand
sculptures, beach parties, kite flying, and concerts were also in full swing to celebrate the Sunshine State's sandy beaches.
"We're gratified by this great response from fellow Floridians who wanted to get out and show the beauty of this part of paradise that we enjoy every day-- 825 miles of beaches that are clean, clear, open for business, and as amazing as ever," said Chris Thompson, president and CEO of Visit Florida.
