BlackBerry Messenger Could Be Coming To iPhone And Android Soon (AAPL, GOOG, RIMM)

RIM BlackBerry Torch

Reports started spreading today that BlackBerry's popular Messenger (BBM) app could be coming to iPhone and Android devices soon.

BGR had the original report this morning, but details are sparse on a release date or pricing. It's possible that RIM could charge iPhone and Android owners a one-time fee for access to the service.

Currently, BBM is free and built in to all BlackBerry phones and allows users to send instant messages to each other. It's much faster than texting, and you can tell if the recipient has read your message or not.

The iPhone and Android versions are likely to be stripped down and only allow you to share text, not images or video like you can on BlackBerry.

BBM on iPhone and Android will mean that almost anyone with a smartphone will be able to communicate over RIM's network. That's a huge opportunity for RIM.
