Suddenly, eBook Sales Are Huge

Book Burning

For huge publishing house Hachette, which publishes the Twilight series among others, ebook revenue is up in a big way – about 88% year over year.

It now accounts for approximately 22% of Hatchette's revenue in the United States and 5% in the United Kingdom, according to a release by Lagardere, the big French media conglomerate that owns Hachette.

For a big publisher, ebook revenue is now over 20% of revenue. That's a huge milestone.

The question remains whether publishers will be able to survive in a digital era or whether they'll be cut out.

Here's How Amazon Took The Lead In The Billion Dollar EBook Market -- And Why We Think They'll Dominate (AMZN)

jeff bezos amazon

The most interesting thing about last night's report that the ebook market will reach $1 billion this year wasn't so much that number -- through it's impressive, especially considering the growth rate -- but that Amazon has a full 50% marketshare there thanks to its Kindle platform.

When Apple announced the iPad with its iBookstore many people thought the inferior Kindle would be toast, but by letting people read Kindle books on any device, Amazon has preserved, and even arguably gained, marketshare. Today, most of the people who read books on iPad do it on the Kindle app.

The ebook market is a battle of the titans. It's Amazon versus Apple versus Barnes & Noble versus Sony. It also crucially involves all the big publishers, who are scared of going digital but know they must embrace it lest they go the way of the music industry, and so have been taking two steps forward and one step back.

But Amazon played beautifully every step of the game. And now, in a market that is growing very big, very fast, and probably has strong network effects, it has an early lead which makes us think it will end up dominating it. In fact, we think Amazon's marketshare will end up closer to 90%.

Here's how it happened and why we think Amazon can't be stopped.

Leatherbound Helps You Compare eBook Prices and Availability

logo_leather.jpgEven as eBook sales soar, the experience of browsing and buying eBooks still leaves a lot to be desired. If you are more interested in a particular title than in your loyalty to a particular eReader, looking for the cheapest version - or even an available version - of a book can be pretty tedious.

Is it even in the iBookstore? Is it cheaper on Amazon's Kindle or on the Barnes & Noble Nook?

Leatherbound addresses that problem by giving users a site where they can look for titles and compare their prices for Kindle, Nook, and iBook. Enter an author name or title, and the site responds with price, availability, and a link to the appropriate eBookstore. Quick and simple.

Leatherbound was created this weekend as part of the Rails Rumble, a programming competition that gives teams 48 hours to build a web app in Ruby on Rails.

Team Leatherbound is comprised of Andrew Dumont, Nathan Carnes, Adrian Pike, and Amiel Martin. Dumont, who is also the Director of Business Development at Seesmic, says that the team has plans down the road to add movies and music to the apps' search capabilities. However, as judging for the Rails Rumble competition is going on now, the project has to stay "as is."

But for a weekend project, Leatherbound's "as is" is pretty good.
