AOL LAYOFFS: Coming Soon, If Not Today (AOL)

tim armstrong, arianna huffington, top gun

The layoffs we've been expecting since AOL announced restructuring costs following its $315 million Huffington Post acquisition could come as soon as today, Kara Swisher reports.

The Times Of India speculates that AOL's office there will be the hardest hit.

Right now, AOL has people in India put together many of its articles and slideshows. Those are tasks people over there expect new AOL media boss Arianna Huffington will assign to her own people. (Interns?)

In an uncomfortable twist, today's layoffs (if they are today) will be quickly followed by toasts of champagne and lots of Greek cookies, as AOL celebrates the FTC's approval acquisition of the HuffPo buy.

In a filing with the SEC following  the $315 million acquisition, AOL announced that it expects "restructuring charges" due to "cost overlap" to total $20 million in 2011.

We think that means this layoff won't be a big one.

When AOL cut ~1,400 people in early 2010, the restructuring charge was $150 million.

Myspace Planning Layoffs As Much As 50% of Its Staff

AllThingsD's Liz Gannes reporting that trouble in MySpace land. The social networking site turned social entertainment hub--is in the midst of planning that could soon result in significant layoffs of its staff. The number could be as much as 50% of the 1,100 employees at Myspace, largely based in the U.S., but also in international locations.

More Layoffs Expected At MySpace (NWS)

mike jones

MySpace has a new advertising deal with Google, which the company announced today.

But it's not all good news at MySpace.

At All Things D, Peter Kafka reports that MySpace has some serious cost issues, including about $70 million per year in expenses left over from the "go-go years."

Kafka writes, "So how else can you cut costs? There are some obvious ways to go, and they won’t be pleasant for MySpace’s remaining staff."

In other words: More cuts for MySpace, which is already a skeleton of its former self.

Yahoo FINALLY Comments On Layoffs (YHOO)

carol bartz

Yahoo has finally issued an official statement on the layoffs at the company.

To this point, the company had been acting like the layoffs weren't happening.

Predictably, it's bland:

Today’s personnel changes are part of our ongoing strategy to best position Yahoo! for revenue growth and margin expansion and to support our strategy to deliver differentiated products to the marketplace. We’ll continue to hire on a global basis to support our key priorities.

Yahoo! is grateful for the important contributions made by the employees affected by this reduction.  We are offering severance packages and outplacement services to these employees.

Did Those Yahoo Layoffs Hit Early?

There's been a lot of speculation around when these Yahoo layoffs will roll out. As we heard a few weeks ago, Yahoo plans to cut as much as 20 percent of its workforce. We reported that layoffs started taking place two weeks ago, particularly in the Yahoo Groups and Flickr Product groups. But All Things Digital informed us that layoffs would actually be starting around December 13th. But it looks like Yahoo may have started to give pink slips, according to this Tweet from Yahoo senior software developer Zach Graves. Graves writes, "The number of people carrying boxes out of Yahoo tonight is not surprising, nor the last of it."

Are Yahoo's Layoffs Getting Started Today? (YHOO)

carol bartz surprised

Yahoo's new wave of layoffs -- rumored to be on the way since earlier this month -- may be underway, TechCrunch reports.

TechCrunch has received multiple anonymous tips purportedly from Yahoos suggesting firings were imminent or ongoing. One tipster claiming to be from Yahoo Groups said the division had been reduced by 22%.

Yahoo is expected to trim 10-20% of its work force.

For what it's worth, the one Yahoo we've heard from so far hadn't head anything yet. Yahoo has this to say:

Yahoo! is always evaluating expenses to align with the company’s financial goals. Beyond that, we don’t comment on rumors or speculation.

So, what's up Yahoos? Let us know: nsaint@businessinsider.com.
