Comment on Is Google+ a bigger threat to Twitter than it is to Facebook? by mike

I think it is an interesting point that the forced brevity of twitter makes it easier to follow lots of people. However, G+ could easily adapt a 'headline/article' format. Give the 'headline' area a couple hundred words maybe. Then, when following you would have the choice of following full or just headlines. The 'headlines' would have quick links to unfold the full post of course. Maybe also indicators if the post contains pics or other meta. So - essentially the 'headline' could be used unto itself like twitter or it could be used as an opening paragraph laying out the topic of the longer post.

Comment on Android This Week: Skype On 3G; Amazon Tablet; G-Slate Review by Mike

Hi Kevin, I've set up Skype on my Verizon Galaxy Tab and paid the $60 annual fee to buy a phone number. In Google Voice I then set that up as just another number that Google voice will ring. Plus you can set Skype up to show the Caller ID of my google voice number. This makes it completely transparent to anyone receiving or sending a voice call to me. Works great!

Comment on Big Media Wants More Money From Netflix by Mike

The content owners wanting more money doesn't surprise me but I hope Netflix doesn't get suckered into another bad deal like Epix($1 billion over five years). I believe Netflix(and us) should pay a fair price for content, I will not tolerate price gouging. @Scott Jensen, I don't know if you are deranged or a troll. First of all most studios are the content producers and they hold the copyrights, Netflix must negotiate license agreements with the studios. It's foolish to think that Netflix would produce their own content. Secondly you are condoning piracy which is not the topic here, I was a poor college student and I never pirated anything(music or movies).

Comment on Google Places iPhone App Now Available by Mike Perry

Places is useful, but it'd be more useful if it cached data (at least on my 3G). Check for restaurants, and it takes 15-20 seconds to load the data over WiFi. Check for coffee shops and it takes about the same time. Then check restaurants again and everything must reload via cellular or WiFi. That's unnecessary and can be a nuisance when you're in a hurry. Places should cache the last few items checked. It also needs a way to find and store a location, so you can check a spot before you get there. All in all, it's a good start, but only a start.

Comment on Apple’s Greatest Advantage: The Apple Ecosystem by Mike

I was a PC user but have used Macs for both business and personal needs for nearly 2 decades. The only real complaint I have is Microsoft's (quite understandable) reluctance to give Mac Office the same bells & whistles it reserves for PCs. But that's the only way they can hope to compete, since Mac OSX is clearly a superior OS and their vast Office dominance is a cash cow. (Don't agree? Just ask 10 PC users & 10 Mac users how often their system freezes/crashes and has to be rebooted. BTW, in my case, it was ONCE in the past 3 years. It just doesn't happen!!) I also agree with the post regarding the ergonomics of Apple design. Last night I was looking at a Blackberry keyboard - with dark red numbers on a black background! What the hell are they thinking?? As the man said: 'Apple would never do that!' The bottom line is that what Apple really sells an enjoyable, satisfying experience. Yes, you pay a premium for that experience, but it pales by comparison to the cost of psychotherapy for dealing with the alternatives!

Comment on VLC on Thin Ice at the App Store? by Mike Perry

Let me get this right. Soon, users won't be free to get a copy of a Free Software Foundation application for their iPhones because rules developed a decade and more ago for distributing software to desktop computers are being violated, rules that seem to assume that every iPhone user is ready, willing and able to recode and branch their own version of VLC. Like Black and Ian before me, I suspect the Free Software Foundation needs to tweak their policies for apps running on mobile devices. I may get mad if my iMac crashes and I have to reboot, or even use my laptop until I can fix the problem. But I simply can't afford to have my iPhone crashing, shutting off all phone contact with the world. In short, an iPhone isn't a desktop computer and apps for it shouldn't be forced to play by the same rules. The FSF rules need to bend a bit to take into account that difference.
