GADGET PR0NZS: Inside The Biggest Dork-Fest New York Has Seen In A While

dylan ellis gdgt

GDGT Live was in full swing last night, bringing the coolest and newest tech to New York City.

Dozens of brands were there to show off the latest things they've been working on, and we were there, camera in hand.

Here are the most interesting things we saw.

MakerBots were printing 3D objects all night. This one's making a whistle.

Tweets with the #gdgtny hashtag were projected live during the event.

The HTC Sensation was there, easily the best phone in the house.

This Is The Best "Poo Management" App We've Seen So Far

baby manager app

Baby Manager is a new iPhone app that helps you with a newborn child.

It lets you log everything, like feedings, and see stats on your child.

Our two favorite features, however?

Diaper Challenge, which lets you time yourself when changing a diaper, and Poo Management to log when the baby fills her/his diapers.

Poo Management. Welcome to parenting!

In any case, it seems pretty neat and useful.

The Earth As Art 3 – The Beauty of the Earth as Seen by Landsat

I’m a huge fan of photography, am amazed by satellite imagery and supporting technologies, and am constantly wowed by Earth imagery turned art, and so there’s no surprise that the USGS Earth as Art resource is a favorite stop on the web. Via the USGS EROS data center check out the Earth as Art resource, [...]

Microsoft Has Seen The Light. And It’s Not Silverlight.

Nearly a year ago, Microsoft pulled together a group of reporters for Bing Fall Release event. The highlight of the presentation was a demo showing off some nifty new features in Bing Maps. The problem? All of this stuff required Microsoft's Silverlight browser plug-in to work. I berated the company for once again pushing users towards a more proprietary web. So today it's time to laud them, as they seem to be backing away from that strategy. During last week's Professional Developers Conference (PDC), ZDNet's Mary-Jo Foley asked Bob Muglia, Microsoft's SVP of the Server and Tools Business, why the company failed to highlight Silverlight in a meaningful way this year. His answer was rather surprising.

Ray Ozzie Has Seen The Future, And It Looks A Lot Like Google

Just as Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie is preparing to step down, he's leaving the software giant with a farewell memo outlining where the "Post-PC" world is headed. Titled "Dawn of a New Day," it comes across as a dire warning for Microsoft to move faster away from its dependence on the PC towards "continuous services" in the cloud available across a wide array of "connected devices." Ozzie has hit upon some of these themes before, starting with a big-think memo five years ago called "The Internet Services Disruption." Certainly his original concept of Microsoft Mesh was very much in this vein of syncing data across devices and the cloud. But Mesh has been years in the making, and is only now beginning to see the light of day in limited ways.
