Vid.ly, Yet Another Video Hosting Service, Launches Today

vidly150.pngEncoding.com has been around for the past several years, and they have yet another turnkey video encoding service called quick catchingly, Vid.ly. The product, which has been in beta since February, was announced today and so far has had more than five million video views already.

The focus on the service is flexibility. They provide customizable output formats with variable bit rates to suit both mobile and desktop users, premium access to world-class content delivery networks, and a number of other features.

Many of their competitor video hosting sites use the Encoding.com site themselves for their needs, so the announcement is somewhat ironic. They fill the gap in between YouTube/Vimeo at the low and nearly free end and Brightcove/Kaltura at the higher end. Vid.ly is designed mostly for smaller video producers that don't want to spend a lot of money but also don't have lots of technical expertise.

The published pricing schedule is very complex and somewhat akin to Amazon's Web Services where the variables include the number of videos posted, their size and the number of views per month.

There is a free version, where you can upload one video at a time and get a shortened URL that you can use to link to it, similar to what YouTube et al. does. With Vid.ly Pro, you will have access to analytics (coming soon), ability to control output renditions, CDN choice (Akamai and CloudFront, with more coming later), their own APIs and player customization. Even with the free account, you have unlimited video source file size, unlike some of the other video hosting providers.

The Risks Of Using Google (Or Any Single Service Provider) For Everything (GOOG)

Black Hole

New York artist Dylan Marcheschi uses Google services for just about everything -- e-mail, blogging, photos, calendar entries, and even reading news stories.

So when Google mysteriously terminated his account on July 15, he was put in a tough spot.

As Infoworld reports, it turns out that a robot detected an image that it thought was child pornography on his Picasa Web account, so it terminated his account.

But Marcheschi wasn't able to reach a real human until he wrote a long nastygram on TwitLonger and promoted it through his Twitter account, @ThomasHollywood.

Once he actually talked to a real Google employee, the company turned his account back on -- minus the supposedly offensive image.

All's well that ends well, right?

Except the story shows how risky it is trusting your online life with one provider.

It's one thing if Facebook suspends your account -- at least you'll still be able to send email and use your mobile phone.

But Google is almost unique because it offers so many services under the umbrella of a single account. If you use Android and your account is suspended, you can lose all the contacts and stored data on your phone as well.

With the addition of Google+, rules for profiles have gotten more confusing -- the company has suspended some celebrity profiles that it thought were fake, and has also cut some business profiles from the service.

The one bright spot in all this is that Google has a service called Takeout that makes it easy for you to take your data out of its services and create a backup -- or switch to another provider completely. That's more than Microsoft, Yahoo, and other big providers offer.

The lesson: use it before you need it. Or better yet, spread your online life among multiple providers.

Comment on The best music service you don’t know just got better by wonderwhy-er

Wow... Those SoundCloud examples are very impressive. Last.fm similarity channels don't come close to this. Now we need Google to buy then, add audio search in internet and add it to their sound storage service and integrate with Google+ stuff :D

Google's Facebook-Killer Will Get Games And A Question-And-Answer Service

google facebook funny video

Lines in the source code for Google+ hint that the service will soon get games and a Q&A service.

Engadget uncovered several cryptic lines in the source code that mention "Google+ Games."

This isn't a surprise: earlier this year Google posted a job listing for a product manager of games who would be "significantly influencing Google's social platform."

Last year, then-CEO Eric Schmidt confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that Google would eventually announce a partnership with Zynga. Details may come out whenever Zynga files for its IPO, which is supposedly happening in days.

The source code also contains references to what looks like a question and answer service, with lines like "You might try rephrasing or tagging your question to make it easier for someone to answer" and "We haven't received an answer to your..." as well as something called "Google Experts." This could be the revamp of Aardvark, the Quora-like Q&A service that Google acquired last year.
