Soon You'll Be Using FaceTime On Your TV (AAPL)

FaceTime

Here's another hidden gem we missed in the latest beta release of iOS 5.

Apple added AirPlay support for FaceTime chat.

That means you can beam your video chats from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch to your Apple TV and see it all on the big screen.

This will be great to set up quick video conferences with a large group of people on one end. However, there's no guarantee the FaceTime/AirPlay combination will stick around in the final release of iOS 5 this fall.

These Apps Will Make You Think Twice About Using FaceTime On Your iPhone Ever Again (AAPL)

jetsons facetime

Apple's videochat app FaceTime is reminiscient of that famous H.G. Wells-Jetsons kind of future that we were promised as kids. But it's certainly not the only videochat solution out there, and it's hardly the first.

As simple as it may be to use, it has its limitations. Most notably, it can only be used over wifi and it can't connect to Android devices.

There are third party apps out there that solve these problems quite elegantly. Here are our favorites.

ooVoo

Simply put, ooVoo rocks. This app supports video calling over wifi and 3G, and it has no trouble communicating with Android devices. The potential killer feature here is that it also allows for 6-way video chat.

If your friends don't have a supported mobile device, they can communicate with you through their web browser with a webcam.

Skype

Skype has permeated the communication world, and a relatively recent update to its iOS app enabled video chat over 3G to anyone else running Skype (desktop users included).

The app also boasts near-CD quality audio.

Price: free

Tango

Tango offers free video calls over 3G and wifi from an iOS device to any other mobile device running the app as well. It's also been continually praised for its ease of use.

Are Android Phones About To Get Their Own FaceTime Copycat? (GOOG)

One of our favorite things about the Motorola Xoom and Honeycomb was the built-in video chat through your Google Talk account.

It let you call from tablet to tablet or even tablet to PC, just like FaceTime on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Now, it looks like that same feature will be coming to Android phones in the next update to version 2.3 Gingerbread.

Android Police found a tweet from a developer at Samsung that says he made a video call using Gingerbread 2.3.4. That likely means 2.3.4 is right around the corner, and could possibly be launched at Google I/O on May 10.

Does Anyone Actually Use FaceTime? [POLL] (AAPL)

facetime steve jobs

Apple is expected to add a front facing camera to iPad 2, bringing yet another device into its "FaceTime" fold.

When the front-facing camera was added to the iPhone we thought it novel, but ultimately useless.

And so far that has proven to be the case for us.

However! We don't travel much for work, and we don't have grandchildren, so maybe we're not the best people to judge.

That's why we're putting it to a vote: Do YOU use FaceTime? Are you excited for video chat to be on all these new gadgets?
