CHART OF THE DAY: Did Groupon Have A Terrible February?

Groupon's U.S. sales collapsed in February according to data gathered by a TechCrunch source.

The source ran a program that collected data off Groupon's site to tabulate sales. The data might not be dollar for dollar accurate, but it could easily be accurate from a direction perspective.

Maybe this is part of the reason Groupon's president Rob Solomon just left the company?

THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL YOUTUBE STARS (of February)

Last month, we debuted our YouTube power rankings with Freddie Wong kicking off the year as the most powerful YouTube star in the world.

Throughout January, however, views of Freddie Wong's videos have gone down enough to drop him out of our top ten. So, who's the most powerful YouTube star in the world now?

Among the candidates are Rémi Gaillard (pictured), who just posted more of his real-life Mario Kart antics, and Keenan Cahill and his lip-syncing skills.

We looked at each partner's monthly views, average views per video, and percentage of "Likes" they received throughout January. Find out which YouTube partner is this month's most powerful YouTube star in the world.

10. DieAussenseiter

DieAussenseiter is the comedy duo of Alexander and Dima from Germany, where they reign as the country's most subscribed-to YouTube channel.

Like most other YouTube stars, DieAussenseiter make music video parodies, comedy sketches, and vlogs (in German).

9. Ryan Higa (nigahiga)

Ryan Higa, aka nigahiga, is the first and, so far, only YouTube star to reach 3 million subscribers.

He only pushed out two new videos in January, but his tremendous following ensures him multi-million views for all his videos.

Facebook Phone Coming In February, Says Report

The rumors about a Facebook phone have been swirling since the summer, and a new report in City UK says the first handsets may appear as early as next month from HTC.

According to the report, the phones will run a version of Google's Android operating system and will feature the Facebook logo and colors.

But this might only be the beginning. Facebook CTO Bret Taylor gave an interesting hint when he spoke at the Inside Social Apps conference yesterday.

He was describing the challenge of updating Facebook for a bunch of different mobile platforms:

When we update Facebook, we have to update seven different versions: Facebook.com, m.facebook.com, touch.facebook.com, iPhone app, Android app, Blackberry app, and a bunch from people who have built custom versions into their own OSs. [Italics added.]

He then went on to talk about how HTML5 would help reduce the amount of work Facebook would have to do to reach all these different platforms.

But the last part of the sentence stood out because it was the first time we'd heard that there are a "bunch" of custom versions of Facebook for mobile phone platforms. Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform boasts tight integration with Facebook, but where are the others?

This sounds a lot like a glimpse into the near future rather than something that's happening today.

Windows Phone Update In February Says Developer (MSFT, GOOG, AAPL)

The head of a company that develops mobile apps is expecting a significant update to Windows Phone 7 in February. Among the changes: easing restrictions for third-party developers, which could increase the number of "long-tail" apps available for the phone.

The update will almost certainly add copy and paste, which has already appeared in an update pushed out to some developer-only handsets. It may also offer a better way for corporations to deploy homegrown apps--today they have to distribute them through the public marketplace.

Equally important, said this person, it will loosen some of the odd restrictions on what apps can and cannot do. For instance, applications can store data locally. But if they want to let users download files, such as music or Office documents, to local storage the applications have to do it through the Web browser. This could help spark more

This developer was glad for the changes, but slightly annoyed because they've already written the app to work around these restrictions, and will have to change it.

But hardly anybody has downloaded the Windows Phone 7 version of his company's app anyway, suggesting low sales for the phones so far--a suggestion bolstered by Microsoft's refusal to disclose sales numbers. Rather, app downloads for his company are split about 60/40 between Android and iPhone. Maybe that's why Pandora bailed on its plans to release a Phone 7 app.
