Chrome Hits 20% Marketshare (Report) (GOOG, MSFT)

rocket launch

Google Chrome now has 20% marketshare in browsers, according to online analytics firm StatCounter, TheNextWeb reports.

This is pretty staggering. Just two years ago, Chrome was at 2.8%.

The gains came at the expense of both Firefox and Internet Explorer, which is now dipping below 50% marketshare.

This shows a few things:

  • Google's got some great engineers. (We already knew that, but worth repeating);

  • The browser market is actually an opportunity. People think of the browser as boring, utility software, but if tens of millions of people are willing to switch browsers, it means there's room for a newcomer. And there's opportunity for change and evolution. This is why RockMelt, a startup founded by a bunch of former Netscape rockstars, recently raised $30 million.

Apple Is Recalling Verizon iPad 2s [REPORT] (AAPL, VZ)

    Verizon iPhone line

Apple has issued a recall for Verizon iPad 2's.

Apple Store employees have been instructed to scan iPad 2 stocks for Verizon iPads that fall under a certain range of serial numbers and return them, 9to5 Mac reports.

The iPads are having problems viewing and editing account information after activating with Verizon's network.

This isn't the first problem with Verizon iPads. Earlier this spring several users had problems connecting to the carrier's 3G network.

We're reaching out to Apple for comment now. Stay tuned for updates.

"Yes, Social Media Does Pay Off," A New Report Says

laptop hands computerRead it and tweet: Social media takes a lot of time, but it pays off, says a report released today.

Ninety percent of marketers surveyed say that social media is important for their business, with the self employed and small business owners with two or more employees "more likely to strongly agree," says the 2011 Social Media Marketing Report, which surveyed some 3,300 marketers.

The No. 1 payoff: Generating more business exposure, say nearly 9 in 10 marketers. Increased traffic (72 percent) and improved search rankings (62 percent) were also top on the list. Improved sales was last on the list of seven benefits, with 43 percent of those surveyed enjoying success—but it was the self-employed and small business owners with two or more employees who were most likely to report that social media helped them close new business.

The self-employed and small businesses also were most likely to find business partnerships through social media, with at least 59 percent reporting that benefit.

As almost anyone who's ever updated a status (and then clicked around for another hour) can attest, social media is time-consuming. More than half (58 percent) of respondents are using social media for more than six hours per week, and about one-third (34 percent) invest 11 or more hours weekly. Fifteen percent spend more than 20 hours a week blogging, tweeting, and the like.

The more experience respondents had with social media, the more time they spent: 63 percent of people with three or more years experience spend more than 10 hours a week on social media. Just 41 percent of those with one to three years experience spend that much time. For the record, about half of those surveyed have less than a year's experience with social media marketing.

Wondering if you can (or should) hire someone to do this sort of marketing for you? Just 28 percent of businesses are outsourcing some portion of their social media marketing, says the survey.

Where, exactly, are efforts being spent? Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and blogs were the top four social media tools. Facebook overtook Twitter to take the top spot in the study this year (in 2010 it was Twitter).

But some three-quarters (77 percent) of marketers plan to increase their use of YouTube and video marketing this year—a virtual gold rush.

Facebook Phone Coming In February, Says Report

    Facebook Phone

The rumors about a Facebook phone have been swirling since the summer, and a new report in City UK says the first handsets may appear as early as next month from HTC.

According to the report, the phones will run a version of Google's Android operating system and will feature the Facebook logo and colors.

But this might only be the beginning. Facebook CTO Bret Taylor gave an interesting hint when he spoke at the Inside Social Apps conference yesterday.

He was describing the challenge of updating Facebook for a bunch of different mobile platforms:

When we update Facebook, we have to update seven different versions: Facebook.com, m.facebook.com, touch.facebook.com, iPhone app, Android app, Blackberry app, and a bunch from people who have built custom versions into their own OSs. [Italics added.]

He then went on to talk about how HTML5 would help reduce the amount of work Facebook would have to do to reach all these different platforms.

But the last part of the sentence stood out because it was the first time we'd heard that there are a "bunch" of custom versions of Facebook for mobile phone platforms. Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform boasts tight integration with Facebook, but where are the others?

This sounds a lot like a glimpse into the near future rather than something that's happening today.
