It used to be that only technology companies used social media for everday business.
But according to a report from NetProspex, that is no longer the case.
The group studied the social media habits of 12 million business people, cataloging Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn use from business email addresses.
The results indicate a changing landscape.
"If you look at the top 10 companies, for the first time we have four companies that are not technology companies," Michael Bird, the chief revenue officer and spokesman for the Social Media Report.
"We are starting to see is that the broader business community [become] the companies that are the most social active."
Those companies include The New York Times Co. (No. 1), Limited Brands (No. 5), and The Washington Post Co. (10).
But the shift away from technology companies isn't the only shift that is occurring. The job descriptions of business people using social media is changing as well.
Before, says Bird, "it was the marketing team, the PR team, the communications team, the CMO."
Now, "the top groups in terms of usage are not marketing-oriented, they are deal-oriented. They are more ground level, connecting with a customer to accelerate a deal."

Famed cyber-troublemakers Anonymous are taking things into their own hands after Google removed their Google+ profile and blocked their Gmail account.
In retaliation, Anonymous is starting their own social network, dubbed "AnonPlus."
In a rather grandiose manifesto on the splash page, AnonPlus.com currently reads:
"Welcome to AnonPlus. This will be your future. This will be our future. Today, we welcome you to begin anew…to watch this glorious incipience happen – one upon which you will never turn your back on. Welcome to the Revolution – a new social network where there is no fear…of censorship…of blackout…nor of holding back. Life is what you make of it – and we are making it. As you step through into the coming weeks, months, and years with us…they will know that we've arrived. There will be no more oppression. There will be no more tyranny. We are the people and we are Anonymous. We have arrived."

Today's advice comes from Brian Solis, principal at Altimeter Group.
"You can lose yourself in anything. But, everything starts with establishing goals and objectives. Many businesses aren’t really thinking about it on a deeper level.
"Businesses are looking at goals from the standpoint of number of followers, but in reality those are soft metrics that don’t really show or demonstrate whether we’re on the right track.
"I’m a firm believer in tangible goals. Do we want to generate leads? Hire new employees? Set out with objectives and build programs around that to see the impact you’re having—then you can assign time, resources, and budgets to it.
"We find that over time businesses will be required to have a full-time person and at least part-time in different departments. Then, as you see the ability to meet goals and objectives, you can make the choice to expand."
