INSTANT MBA: Don't Hire Too Many Highly-Talented People

Reed Hastings, Netflix CEOToday's advice comes from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings' interview at the D9 conference:

"We spend so much on culture and talent density, which is the fewest number of highly-talented people possible; not the largest number."

"Our dreams are not of a million engineers, our dreams are of a very small number of highly-talented people and we think that's one of the keys to staying very innovative and flexible, because with a small number of people you can run very informally, you don't need a lot of process."

Hastings says his biggest fear is for Netflix to become one of those companies that's going through a cycle where they experience a surge of innovation before coming to a sudden stop.

"It gets to nearly every company," he says.

INSTANT MBA: Don't Lose Yourself In Social Media

brian solis

Today's advice comes from Brian Solis, principal at Altimeter Group.

"You can lose yourself in anything. But, everything starts with establishing goals and objectives. Many businesses aren’t really thinking about it on a deeper level.

"Businesses are looking at goals from the standpoint of number of followers, but in reality those are soft metrics that don’t really show or demonstrate whether we’re on the right track.

"I’m a firm believer in tangible goals. Do we want to generate leads? Hire new employees? Set out with objectives and build programs around that to see the impact you’re having—then you can assign time, resources, and budgets to it.

"We find that over time businesses will be required to have a full-time person and at least part-time in different departments. Then, as you see the ability to meet goals and objectives, you can make the choice to expand."

INSTANT MBA: Business Plans Are Important And Necessary

amazon jeff bezosToday's advice comes from Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.

"So, you want to start a company.

"Well, the first thing you do is you should write a business plan, and so I did that. I wrote about a 30-page business plan. I wrote a first draft. In fact, I wrote the first draft on the car trip from the East Coast to the West Coast. And, that is very helpful.

"You know the business plan won't survive its first encounters with reality. It will always be different. The reality will never be the plan, but the discipline of writing the plan forces you to think through some of the issues and to get sort of mentally comfortable in the space. Then you start to understand, if you push on this knob this will move over here and so on. So, that's the first step."
