Looks Like We May Be Stuck With Just An Iphone 4s After All (aapl)

steve-jobs-iphone-4s

The evidence continues to grow that Apple will only announce an iPhone 4S on Tuesday, a souped up iPhone 4 that has the same external design but a faster processor and other powerful internals.

9to5Mac discovered a mention of the "iPhone 4S" in the latest developer beta of iTunes. The reference also links to an image of the current Verizon version of the iPhone 4.

There's no mention of an iPhone 5 or any photos of a redesigned device.

It looks like Apple pulled the iTunes beta from its developer's page. We can't find it, and we're hearing the same thing from other developers on Twitter. We're still trying to confirm Apple removed it.

Head over to 9to5Mac to see the evidence >

UPDATE: Yup, it looks like Apple has removed the latest iTunes beta from its developer's site. We just tried to download it and got the following error:

Google Geo Developers Blog: 5 Great Maps... That Are Just Great!

Each month I try to focus on 5 great maps within a certain theme, but this month Google Geo developers have really outdone themselves and I’ve been blown away by a flurry of great new Maps API applications across the board. I’ve been especially impressed by the new uses I’ve seen of Styled Maps, Fusion Tables, and our new Places API.

InstaEarth

Instagram is an exciting photography tool, but what really takes Instagram to the next level are applications like InstaEarth from Modea. InstaEarth is an easy way to search for and discover Instragram users and photos on a map. The application makes use of the Places API with Autocomplete to help users to search around a landmark or address. From InstaEarth, “InstaEarth is a way to discover and view beautiful Instagram photography taken around the world. View your feed, friends' feeds, popular photos, or navigate the map and explore the world through the eyes of Instagrammers everywhere.”

TeleGeography - Submarine Cable Map

When you make a phone call or send an email abroad, most of the time that data travels by way of submarine cables. Submarine cables are the backbone of the global economy, so it’s fascinating to spend time exploring a map that shows where these cables are located. In addition to being a really interesting, fun, and a great looking map, this map is also technically savvy application. Each line representing a submarine cable is clickable and when selected grays out the other cables for better visibility. The map also uses Styled Maps to help the cables stand out better and Fusion Tables to help manage the data on the back-end.

DART St. Louis

There are two things I love to geek out on: maps and photography. That’s why I love this map from DART St. Louis. From their website, “In April 2011 over 250 creative St. Louisans gathered to throw darts at a huge map of the City of St. Louis. Participants then had one month to visit the area where their dart landed and make a photograph. The resulting collection of photographs shows a snapshot of St. Louis as it is today, one random block at a time.”

Berliner Morgenpost - Berlin Elections Map

Last month I wrote a post about a 5 Great Maps from Germany and this month we have yet another great map from Germany. Using Fusion Tables, Berliner Morgenpost mapped out the results of the September 2011 Berlin elections. Voting districts are colored coded by which political party received the majority of votes. Additionally, you can click on any one of the voting districts which will display an infowindow with a chart of the full voting results. This an excellent example of Google Maps API supporting the democratic process and bringing better transparency to government.

Dodge Journey Search

To promote the new Dodge Journey, Dodge is running a competition on YouTube where users can win one of three brand new Dodge Journeys. Video clues are released on YouTube to help users track down the secret location of the vehicle and if they find it, they own it. The clues are related to places in the real world, so users can rely on Google Maps and Places to help them figure out where the car is located. The Maps API serves as the hub of information for this competition and uses Styled Maps to match Dodge branding along with the Places API with Autocomplete to help users follow up on clues.

It's Not Just Tech Companies Using Social Media Any More

sheen twitter

It used to be that only technology companies used social media for everday business.

But according to a report from NetProspex, that is no longer the case.

The group studied the social media habits of 12 million business people, cataloging Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn use from business email addresses.

The results indicate a changing landscape.

"If you look at the top 10 companies, for the first time we have four companies that are not technology companies," Michael Bird, the chief revenue officer and spokesman for the Social Media Report.

"We are starting to see is that the broader business community [become] the companies that are the most social active."

Those companies include The New York Times Co. (No. 1), Limited Brands (No. 5), and The Washington Post Co. (10).

But the shift away from technology companies isn't the only shift that is occurring. The job descriptions of business people using social media is changing as well.

Before, says Bird, "it was the marketing team, the PR team, the communications team, the CMO."

Now, "the top groups in terms of usage are not marketing-oriented, they are deal-oriented. They are more ground level, connecting with a customer to accelerate a deal."

This 21-Year-Old Just Sold Her Startup For $100 Million

kid entrepreneur Catherine Cook

In 2005, Catherine Cook and her brother David had an idea for a startup. The high schoolers flipped through a yearbook and wanted to make a digital version.

The 15-and-16-year-olds got to work and created MyYearbook. In the 6-year span, the duo raised $17 million in financing, grew the site to 70 million users, and generated 1.2 billion monthly pageviews.

Today, a publicly-traded Latino social network, Quepasa, announced its $100 million acquisition of MyYearbook. The majority of the deal, $82 million, is Quepasa common stock. The other $18 million is cash.

Geoff Cook, MyYearbook's CEO and sibling of Catherine and David, wrote a letter to his 100+ employees:

"I don’t consider this an exit or the end. I consider it the end of the beginning, and I believe we have a lot more innovative products to create," he says.

Welcome to retirement Catherine, Geoff and David! Although we're sure this won't be the last company they create.

stormtroopers star wars sync iphone 4

Apple just released the next iOS update, version 4.3.4. (It's version 4.2.9 for those of you with Verizon iPhones.)

The update contains a fix for the loophole that leaves iPhones vulnerable to hackers when downloading PDFs.

It's the same vulnerability that the popular tool Jailbreak Me uses to jailbreak iPhones over the web.

If you plan on Jailbreaking using Jailbreak Me, skip this update and only download PDFs from trusted sources. Otherwise, this is an essential update for anyone.

Sync your iDevice with iTunes now to get the update.
