Looks Like We May Be Stuck With Just An Iphone 4s After All (aapl)

The evidence continues to grow that Apple will only announce an iPhone 4S on Tuesday, a souped up iPhone 4 that has the same external design but a faster processor and other powerful internals.

9to5Mac discovered a mention of the "iPhone 4S" in the latest developer beta of iTunes. The reference also links to an image of the current Verizon version of the iPhone 4.

There's no mention of an iPhone 5 or any photos of a redesigned device.

It looks like Apple pulled the iTunes beta from its developer's page. We can't find it, and we're hearing the same thing from other developers on Twitter. We're still trying to confirm Apple removed it.

iPad 2s Are Finally Shipping Within Days, Not Weeks (AAPL)

It took four months, but Apple's iPad 2 supply has finally caught up to demand.

Fortune was the first to spot that shipping estimates have dropped to just one to three days, down from up to three weeks when the iPad 2 first launched in March.

It wasn't until recently that shipping times dropped to days instead of weeks.

While I agree that streaming licences are very expensive now and sometimes totally unavailable, I wouldn't say we should 'never' expect an all-streaming future. It's going to happen sooner or later. DVDs are going to be as passe as floppy disks.

Apple Is Recalling Verizon iPad 2s [REPORT] (AAPL, VZ)

Apple has issued a recall for Verizon iPad 2's.

Apple Store employees have been instructed to scan iPad 2 stocks for Verizon iPads that fall under a certain range of serial numbers and return them, 9to5 Mac reports.

The iPads are having problems viewing and editing account information after activating with Verizon's network.

This isn't the first problem with Verizon iPads. Earlier this spring several users had problems connecting to the carrier's 3G network.

Thanks for the mention Stacey. :) I think Bob is spot on; it's the UX that needs to be improved. Wi-Fi works really well when you're at home (and have WPA enabled) but in hotspots it just plain sucks. The fact that hotspots are used at all I think is testament to Wi-Fi's strengths in other departments. You need AT LEAST this if you want a good mobile Wi-Fi UX: 1. Automatic authentication. Enter credentials once, use everywhere. Extra credits for reusing credentials already in the device, e.g. SIM card. 2. Encryption, and preferably with a trusted end-point. The Guardian recently illustrated the trusted end-point part of it (in the sense that over-the-air encryption would not have helped): http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/apr/25/wifi-security-flaw-smartphones-risk 3. Quality coverage. Blanket coverage is great but not if it's 80% crap that makes you want to turn your Wi-Fi off. Quality needs to be actively monitored and managed so that devices only connect (i.e. switch over from 3G) when Wi-Fi signal strength is good enough for a quality UX. We'll hopefully have the first major ISP up and running with all of the above (and some more) this fall.

Apple's Next Phone Will Be The iPhone "4S," Says Analyst

Apple's next iPhone will be called the iPhone 4S, not the iPhone 5, according to "industry checks" by Jefferies analyst Peter Misek.

Misek put out a note on the next iPhone today, and said, it will "include minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support."

Apple wanted to add a chipset to support high speed 4G wireless networks, but the chipsets weren't going to be ready in time.

Because the 4G chips weren't ready, Apple is going with the minor update to the iPhone 4.

Misek also revealed the next version of the phone will work with Sprint, T-Mobile, and China Mobile.
