Hacking Group "Anonymous" Is Making Its Own Social Network

facebook anonymous

Famed cyber-troublemakers Anonymous are taking things into their own hands after Google removed their Google+ profile and blocked their Gmail account.

In retaliation, Anonymous is starting their own social network, dubbed "AnonPlus."

In a rather grandiose manifesto on the splash page, AnonPlus.com currently reads:

"Welcome to AnonPlus. This will be your future. This will be our future. Today, we welcome you to begin anew…to watch this glorious incipience happen – one upon which you will never turn your back on. Welcome to the Revolution – a new social network where there is no fear…of censorship…of blackout…nor of holding back. Life is what you make of it – and we are making it. As you step through into the coming weeks, months, and years with us…they will know that we've arrived. There will be no more oppression. There will be no more tyranny. We are the people and we are Anonymous. We have arrived."

Why Google Renamed Its Search Group "Knowledge"

Alan Eustace

In an SEC filing a couple weeks ago, Google revealed a new title for Alan Eustace: Sr. VP of Knowledge. We remarked that would look pretty cool on a business card.

Today, TechCrunch dug in a little bit to figure out what the name change means.

Search was previously divided among engineering and product leads.

Under the new Larry Page regime, that division no longer exists -- instead, the company is organized into seven product groups each with a top-level exec in charge.

Eustace is the leader of that business. The name change simply reflects that it's not only about search -- it's about other products that help with Google's mission statement: to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.

That includes past projects like its expert-driven Wikipedia imitator Knol and its online database Google Base, neither of which set the world ablaze with success.

According to TechCrunch, former search engineering lead Udi Manber will now oversee these non-search efforts, while Amit Singhal will focus on more traditional search technology like Google's algorithms.

And one more time for the record, here are Google's eight product group leaders, all reporting to Page:

  • Knowledge -- Alan Eustace
  • Local and commerce -- Jeff Huber
  • Advertising -- Susan Wojcicki
  • Android -- Andy Rubin
  • YouTube -- Salar Kamangar
  • Social -- Vic Gundotra
  • Chrome -- Sundar Pinchai

ILM:10: Checking in on Location-based Services (Kelsey Group Blogs)

So why do people check in? Is it, as Gowalla’s Andy Ellwood jokingly suggests because “I am in my 20s and you should just care where I am”? Or are the reasons more substantial? This afternoon’s panel on location-based services focused on why and how users engage with LBS (check ins). Gillian Heltai of comscore said their ...

Group Deal Platform NimbleCommerce Is Ready For Its Closeup

Given the massive success of Groupon (and the huge number of clones out there), it's no surprise that existing publishers and businesses are keen to take advantage of the craze themselves. Some of them have turned to white-label deal services, which allow these publishers to manage their deals without having to reinvent the wheel. And today a company called NimbleCommerce is making its press debut by announcing that it's got deals with "25 large newspapers; business directories and local media companies". You'll notice I put that in quotes — NimbleCommerce won't list off many of the companies it's partnered with, but says that 50% of its clients are publicly traded and that it is "five to ten times bigger than Tippr" and other close competitors. Again, they won't give hard stats, but the clients NimbleCommerce can name are solid: OpenTable uses its platform to run deals, as does Valpak and Canada's Yellow Pages.

“ I have no interest in enlisting in a virtual scavenger hunt, or unlocking merit badges — what is this, the Cub Scouts? — or becoming the narcissistic “Mayor” of my local coffee shop. Thanks for the offer, but I’m afraid I already have some semblance of a life. I do want to keep up with my friends, and (sometimes) let them know where I am. ” – Dear Foursquare, Gowalla: Please Let’s Stop...

Bolo 2010: DoubleDutch Expounds on The Expanding CheckIn Ecosystem (Kelsey Group Blogs)

The rollout of Facebook Places was supposed to spell certain doom for check-in companies such as FourSquare, GoWalla, and the whole check-in and location based services infrastructure, right? But it hasn’t exactly happened that way, says DoubleDutch CEO Lawrence Coburn, who spoke yesterday at Bolo 2010 in Scottsdale. For sure, Facebook Places is powerful, and ...

FaceTime Multiparty Group Video Chat Feature Revealed

It looks that the future updates to FaceTime may enable multiparty conference calls with 3 or more people. This would work extremely well on the iPad's large screen, and would give Apple the edge over competing business-centric tablets (like BlackBerry's Playbook) for corporate use. Skype also recently updated their Windows app to support group chat for up to 5 people, so matching this would be the logical next step for Apple.
