Android Honeycomb’s Going Gets Tough

Of late, Android developers are in a fix. It has been six months since the launch of the Android Honeycomb Tablet in the Market and it has not garnered a potential user base. The problem clearly lies in the dearth in apps optimized for the Android Tablets and analysts are of the view that an evident lack of these Honeycomb aka Android 3.0 Applications is what makes it a less chosen Tablet as opposed to the Apple’s iPad. But any new technology faces such non-acceptance in the beginning; the Honeycomb tablet also had its share of tough criticism and rejection from the global consumers with Apple being the dominant competitor today in the market. Android developers are trying their best to convince their consumers that the Android optimized apps will see a rise by the end of 2011 despite its sluggish start.

Finally! Skype Gets Video Chat On Android (MSFT, GOOG)

skype video chat on android

Skype has finally released the much-anticipated video chat update to its Android app.

iPhone users have been enjoying Skype video chat since January, and Skype has been promising the update since then. Video calls will work over Wi-Fi and 3G.

The downside: Only a few phones work with video calling right now. If you have a Google Nexus S, HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo, or Sony Ericsson Xperia pro, you're in luck though.

Support for more devices is coming soon.

Skype is a free download from the Android Market.

The Most Beautiful Game In The App Store Gets A Massive Update (AAPL)

Infinity Blade

Infinity Blade is not only one of the most graphically impressive games in the App Store, but it's also one of the most fun.

We've spent countless hours slashing our way (in slow-mo, of course) through battles with giant beasts and demons alike.

The game is easy to learn, but is  difficult to become a true master at.

If you haven't bought Infinity Blade yet, now might be the time, because developer Chair Entertainment is adding multiplayer, survival mode, and a few other goodies like new swords and rings.

When you play against a friend, one of you will be able to control the giant beast, while the other controls the knight. In survival mode, you'll see how long you can go without dying.

The new multiplayer element should add tons of replay value to the title, and makes it definitely worth the $2.99 if you're a fan of epic sword battles.

Oh, and this game looks unbelievable on the iPad 2.

eBay Gets An Upgrade! (EBAY)

John Donahoe

Stifel Nicolaus and Lazard both have positive reports out on eBay after yesterday's earnings.

Stifel is upgrading the stock to Buy and Lazard is reiterating its Buy, upping its price target to $40 from $38.

Here's what's so great about eBay:

  • The core marketplace business is growing nicely. The marketplace grew 10%, which is very good in a maturing business.

  • Margins are good. They're up from last quarter and are generally good.

  • PayPal is still a phenomenal business. The day when eBay will be a PayPal company and not the other way around isn't too far.

In other words, forget the idea that eBay is a rocketship, but it's still a good business that is disciplined and growing well. "Steady as she goes," says Stifel.

Microsoft Gets Government Security Sign-Off For Online Services (MSFT, GOOG)

microsoft steve ballmer

Last week, Microsoft helped stir up controversy about whether Google Apps were secure enough for government use.

The debate came down to whether Google Apps for Government had a security certification called FISMA. It turns out the answer was "yes." Google wasn't lying.

Throughout the debate, it was noted that Microsoft did not have the certification for its own online services for government, called BPOS-Federal.

In a fitting postscript, today the government gave BPOS-Federal FISMA certification as well.

That's out of the way, then. Google can no longer advertise FISMA as a unique advantage, and Microsoft no longer gains anything by calling Google a liar. Now perhaps we can get back to the two products competing on their merits.
