HOW TO: Set Up And Get The Most Out Of E-Mail In Mac OS X Lion (AAPL)

lion king email

Mail is easily one of our favorite new features in Mac OS X Lion.

It takes the best features from the iOS app, merges it with the classic Mail desktop app, and gives you the perfect balance of simplicity and power.

Everything from set up to sending messages is very similar to iOS. If you're new to Mac, we'll show you how to get started with Mail right here.

First, you need to set up your e-mail address. Open System Preferences from your dock.

Now click "Mail, Contacts, & Calendars." If you're familiar with e-mail on the iPhone or iPad, you'll have no problem with this.

Lion gives you options for several popular e-mail accounts. Gmail, Yahoo, MobileMe, and AOL all use the same process. We'll use Gmail for this demo.

The Firefox People Are Building A Mobile OS (GOOG, AAPL, MSFT)

browser fight safari chrome ie firefox

Mozilla -- the organization behind the Firefox Web browser -- plans to build a "complete, stand-alone operating system for the Web" called Boot to Gecko, or B2G. It is being designed for mobile devices.

Why? Because the foundation wants to make sure that developers can build Web apps -- particularly HTML5 apps -- that are equal to native apps.

If this sounds familiar, that's because Google's ChromeOS has a similar goal -- to turn Web apps into desktop apps -- and a similar open-source pedigree.

But ChromeOS is subject to business conflicts with Google's other operating system, Android.

Android is not quite as "open" as Chrome, but Android is a huge commercial success, with more than 500,000 device activations every day. ChromeOS is not -- the first Chromebooks are getting panned by reviewers and are interesting mainly as an an academic exercise ("hey, what if we turned the Web into an operating system?")

So the Mozilla project is taking the basic ChromeOS idea and focusing it on the mobile market where Android plays -- for instance, B2G will have ways for developers to get at phone functions like placing calls and taking pictures. At a very low level, the kernel is based on Android.

It's an interesting idea, but to move beyond an academic exercise and into real-world shipping products, B2G will have to get some big commercial company to adopt it.

Maybe it could form the basis of that long-rumored Facebook phone. Or perhaps another big player with mobile ambitions, like Amazon, might take the fledgling OS under its wing.

Another Reason You Don't Need To Be Worried About Apple's Download Only Lion OS (AAPL)

If you have concerns about Lion being download-only, you shouldn't.

Apple has designed a system called "Internet Recovery" that will download and install OS X Lion even if your hard drive fails or somehow gets wiped. From Apple's site:

[Internet Recovery] downloads and starts Lion Recovery directly from Apple servers over a broadband Internet connection. And your Mac has access to the same Lion Recovery features online. Internet Recovery is built into every newly-released Mac starting with the Mac Mini and MacBook Air.

If you're absolutely paranoid and want a hard copy of Lion, Apple will sell it to you on a USB drive for $70.

HOW TO: Download OS X Lion From The Mac App Store (AAPL)

Upgrading your operating system used to be a pain in the ass process requiring multiple installation discs and a careful eye. But with today's release of OS X Lion, it's never been easier.

First, you need to make sure you're running the latest version of Snow Leopard. Click the "Apple" symbol in the top left corner of your screen and select "About This Mac." Make sure you're running version 10.6.8.

If not, click "Software Update" from the same Apple menu and update your system.

Just fire up the Mac App Store. You'll see the giant Lion banner across the top. Click on it.

This brings you to the app page for Lion. It costs $29.99 -- click the price, then click "Buy App."
