Another Reason You Don't Need To Be Worried About Apple's Download Only Lion OS (AAPL)

If you have concerns about Lion being download-only, you shouldn't.

Apple has designed a system called "Internet Recovery" that will download and install OS X Lion even if your hard drive fails or somehow gets wiped. From Apple's site:

[Internet Recovery] downloads and starts Lion Recovery directly from Apple servers over a broadband Internet connection. And your Mac has access to the same Lion Recovery features online. Internet Recovery is built into every newly-released Mac starting with the Mac Mini and MacBook Air.

If you're absolutely paranoid and want a hard copy of Lion, Apple will sell it to you on a USB drive for $70.

How Worried Are Consumers about Privacy?

The need to protect consumer privacy online has been in the spotlight lately, more than ever. In February the U.S. Senate created a new Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law, which will be chaired by Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn. AdWeek quoted Franken <a href="">saying , “The boom of new technologies over the last several years has made it easier to keep in touch with family, organize a community and start a business. It has also put an unprecedented amount of personal informationinto the hands of large companies that are unknown and unaccountable to theAmerican public.” This has been fueled in large part by the scrutiny of Facebook. A Wall Street Journal piece in October 2010 provided details about the controversy, which stemmed from concerns that application developers were gathering information about Facebook users – and their friends – then selling that information to advertiser

Parents Aren't Worried About Facebook Privacy, Partly Because They Don't Understand It

Facebook is in the news yet again over privacy concerns today. These issues are a constant topic of discussion in the tech media, but it's less clear how much of the uproar ever filters down to the average user.

So it's great timing for TRUSTe to drop the results of a recent survey (PDF) on how teens and their parents use social networks, and what they think about privacy issues related to them.

The main takeaways from the survey:

• The vast majority of teens and their parents are comfortable with privacy on social networks, and nearly all parents think their teens use social networks responsibly.

• On the other hand, parents feel pretty strongly that it should be impossible for their teens to share as much information as they can as broadly as they can. So it looks like parents don't understand Facebook privacy as well as they think they do.

• Most parents monitor their teens' online behavior closely, and want full control over what their teens share. A full 10% even admitted to secretly obtaining login access to their teens' accounts.
