Comment on How Do You Define Web Series Success? by Richard

What about "Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog"? It was incredibly successful! Out of all web series mentioned, it is the only only for which I own the DVD and soundtrack- that is a huge accomplishment ... it also won an Emmy. ;D

6-Month-Old Startup Lot18 Closes $10 Million Series B Round

philip james lot18

Last week we told you New York-based startup Lot18 was already doing $1 million+ in sales.

Investors seem to be impressed with that figure, because the wine flash sales site just raised a $10 million Series B round.

It took two months to round up the cash; investors include NEA Ventures and FirstMark Capital, which led the Series A round.

"When we launched in mid-November, we originally said that we would start raising the B round when we had our first million-dollar month," cofounder Kevin Fortuna tells us.  "We thought that would be later this year."

"The revenue numbers blew past expectations from the day we launched [on November 10]. November was a half month and we did $80,000 in sales. Based on the February numbers we saw, we knew March would be a million-dollar month, and April was way bigger than that."

Fortuna says Lot18 will use the money to grow its 60-person staff. It's hiring 35+ positions and is mostly looking for engineers and designers. To accommodate everyone, Lot18 will put money toward a larger office.

Another portion of the money will be dedicated to developing an excellent experience for both customers and wine partners.  It will also be spent launching other sales categories.

"We’re going to be investing in other merchandising opportunities for wine, but wine will stay our main focus," Fortuna tells us. He mentions wine accessories and liquor sales are likely in the near future. The travel category is another thought.

Fortuna says he expects Lot18 to be profitable one year from now. Then again, at the rate Lot18 is growing (50,000+ new users per month), profitability could come much sooner than that.

Comment on Should You Take Your Web Series Exclusive? by Tim

I don't know what's going on at Dailymotion, but a lot of people are complaining about having to endure a seemly endless stream of pre-rolls, as many as 8 in some cases, before being able to watch the chosen content.

I think you are onto the start of a trend Liz. I recently saw The Young Turks show start distributing on Revision3 instead of exclusively YouTube. I think the next step will be content creators distributing content through their own web presence primarily (i.e. squatterstheseries.com) and only putting sample promo stuff up on the big distributors.

Interesting to get a creator's take on how best to expose and distribute his/her show. Brandon's last statement on our need for financing which distribution sites don't provide is the key here. I think for now, the more people who see our work, the better. And the better our work is (with of course the 24hr a day efforts it takes on the part of creators) the more people will support it.

Yardsellr Scores $5 Million Series A From Accel To Become The eBay Of Facebook

Bringing social commerce to Facebook is a big opportunity attracting a lot of capital these days. Social swap meet Yardsellr just raised a $5 million series A financing, led by Accel Partners. Harrison Metal Capital, which previously put up $750,000 in seed funding, also participated. Yardsellr is an eBay for Facebook, except without the auctions. In fact, the company was founded by three former eBay executives, CEO Daniel Leffel (a former manager at eBay), VP of Marketing Jed Clevenger (who used to run the paid search team at eBay), and VP of Community Rachel Makool (who used to run the community team at eBay). Investor Michael Dearing of Harrison Metal is also a former SVP of eBay.com. Yardsellr is currently run out of the Harrison Metal office in Palo Alto.
