Suddenly, Facebook Shuts Down Apps Left And Right

zuckerberg

Facebook has started shutting down apps with tens of thousands of active users left and right, AllFacebook writes.

The reason is Facebook didn't really police these "small" apps before and now has rolled out an algorithm that automatically shuts them down if they post too often to users' walls, etc. The problem is that Facebook didn't tell app makers it was going to do this, so these just woke up Friday and saw their app had been shut down, and very understandably freaked out.

This isn't too big a deal -- most app makers will simply tweak their app to get them back in compliance and move on -- but it shows how miscommunication can turn a routine adjustement into a big freakout.

Suddenly, Zynga Is Crushing It In Mobile

zynga empires and allies

Zynga has three games in the Top Grossing 15 in iOS, Inside Social Games points out.

This is worth paying attention to because despite getting into mobile gaming with much fanfare, Zynga actually didn't have much success for a long time. More broadly, many social games makers tried to diversify into mobile so as to reduce their dependence on Facebook and have been crushed by mobile-specific outfits.

For example, you'll never guess how many downloads Angry Birds gets each day

Even though Zynga and Facebook now have a modus vivendi, Zynga's reliance on the Facebook platform remains a major risk factor on the company. If Zynga can figure out mobile gaming, it will have a much stronger business.

Suddenly, eBook Sales Are Huge

Book Burning

For huge publishing house Hachette, which publishes the Twilight series among others, ebook revenue is up in a big way – about 88% year over year.

It now accounts for approximately 22% of Hatchette's revenue in the United States and 5% in the United Kingdom, according to a release by Lagardere, the big French media conglomerate that owns Hachette.

For a big publisher, ebook revenue is now over 20% of revenue. That's a huge milestone.

The question remains whether publishers will be able to survive in a digital era or whether they'll be cut out.

CHART OF THE DAY: Suddenly, LinkedIn Is A Traffic Firehose

Out of nowhere, Business Insider started seeing real referral traffic from LinkedIn last month. The chart below illustrates the spike.

LinkedIn product manager Liz Walker tells us the traffic is coming from a bunch of sources – mostly new products like LinkedIn.com/Today, newsletters, and LinkedIn News.

All of these sources are programmed by LinkedIn populated "inShares," which are kind of like Facebook "likes" or Twitter "re-tweets."

Who knew?

Google, by the way, is trying to pull of a similar trick with its +1 button.  Larry Page is obsessed with figuring out social. He's worried about how people are finding content in their Facebook News Feeds and Twitter streams before they ever think to Google search for it. Maybe he should worry about Linkedin, too. Maybe he should just buy LinkedIn.
