Spotify Is In America Tomorrow!

spotify horns

After more than two years of anticipation, subscription music service Spotify launches in the U.S. tomorrow.

And based on an early report by Peter Kafka, it will have one feature that will absolutely blow every other subscription music service away: you can listen to 20 hours a month for free, with a few ads thrown in.

That's more than the service now offers in Europe -- there, Spotify recently cut it back from 20 to 10 hours.

The real goal is to get users to sign up for the paid tier at $10 per month (for full ad-free mobile access) or $5 a month (for Web-only).

It will be fascinating to see how Spotify survives with all that free music -- because of the way music licensing works in the U.S., Spotify will have to pay a higher rate (the rate that subscription services pay) even for the free songs. Unlike online radio services like Pandora, which pay a much lower statutory rate.

But whatever -- Spotify is like a unicorn. We've been waiting forever and now it's here.

So where can you get it?

Well, you can't quite yet. Right now, it's by invitation only so you have to enter an email address. They'll send you an invite code.

Stay tuned -- as soon as we get our invite we'll be posting all the details.

Update: For those of you who can't wait to see what it looks like, Tom Warren of WinRumors -- a lucky U.K. resident -- gave us permission to post this screenshot he took:

Google Making Big Search Announcement Tomorrow? (GOOG)

Google Logo

Google is having an Inside Search event for journalists tomorrow in San Francisco hosted by top engineer Amit Singhal.

Danny Sullivan posted the invitation, which says that journalists will be getting an "under the hood look" at how Google Search works and seeing demos of new features.

The last time Google did something like this, it was to introduce Google Instant, which displays search results as you type.

Tomorrow, Google could announce new social search features related to Google +1, more tweaks to help get rid of spam and increase relevance, or some whizzy new feature that nobody has even speculated about yet. We'll be following along and bringing you the news as soon as it happens.

Inside Search is also the name of the official Google Search blog that launched in May. Previously, search info was rolled up into the main Google corporate blog, but the company is big enough and diverse enough now that search apparently deserves its own special place on the Web.

HTC Facebook Phones May Be Announced Tomorrow

Facebook phone from HTC

Pocketnow has published what it calls press shots of two upcoming Facebook phones from HTC.

Both phones feature a small Facebook button below the screen, which would presumably launch a mobile version of the Facebook Web site or a dedicated Facebook app. The PocketNow screenshot also shows a modified version of the HTC Sense UI in which Facebook updates can be delivered directly to the clock app.

Previous reports suggest that the phones will run a modified version of Android and will have minimal local storage. Instead, all photos can be automatically uploaded to Facebook as they're taken -- a feature very similar to the social-sharing features found on Microsoft's ill-fated Kin phones.

The HTC wouldn't be the first Facebook phone -- that honor goes to INQ, which introduced their phone with Facebook functionality a few days ago. Facebook may also be working on its own phone running a specialized version of Android.
