Can Disney help Gowalla in its battle with Foursquare? (The Business Insider)

I’ll be honest, it’s been a while since I’ve used Gowalla (a location-based checkin service you use on your phone). I’ve found that in most of the cities I visit Foursquare has more users, more tips, is faster, easier to check in, etc. But when I arrived at DisneyWorld yesterday for a private tour with several Disney employees, among others, I learned that Disney liked Gowalla more.

Adobe Software Updates To Help Devs Build iOS, PlayBook And Android Apps

Adobe is today pushing updates to its application development software product Flash Builder and the open source Flex framework to enable developers to build apps for iPhone, iPad and BlackBerry PlayBook, following support for the Android platform last April. Developers can now opt to use Adobe's platform to build apps that work across the Web, desktop and a range of tablets smartphones, with the ability to reuse most or all of their existing code and use common logic across all platforms.

Comment on How Microsoft’s Skype Purchase Can Help Windows Phone by Ray G

"clean-ness" of Google experience? I find this laughable. Andriod is the messiest mobile platform todate, not to mention it offers the poorest end-user experience. I configure smart phones for all users in my organization. Most users with android phones keep coming back to me to make sense of tens and tens of junk icons and widets that's all over thier phones by default. I bet google makes some $$$ for filling up anriod with 3rd party junk. There is nothing clean about that.

Microsoft Will Help iPhone Developers Move Their Apps To Windows Phone (MSFT, AAPL)

steve ballmer microsoft

Microsoft has a new weapon in its battle to get more apps for Windows Phone: a tool that will analyze an iPhone app and offer shortcuts for developers to port it to Windows Phone.

Microsoft focused first on a few high-profile consumer apps, talking to companies like Rovio (Angry Birds), Netflix, and Pandora to try and convince them to build on Windows Phone. It also did a lot of outreach at its MIX developer conferences for the last two years.

That approach has gotten Windows Phone up to 15,000 apps -- not bad for a platform that's less than six months old, but still far behind the 350,000 apps in Apple's App Store.

So now, Microsoft is offering iPhone developers a little more help. The iPhone-Windows Phone API Mapping Tool looks at an iPhone app and figures out which iOS APIs it's calling. (An API, or application program interface, is how an application communicates with the underlying operating system and/or hardware.) Then, it maps each of those APIs to an equivalent Windows Phone 7 technique. The tool also offers code samples for developers who aren't familiar with the Microsoft platform.

Right now, the tool only works for three areas: network and Internet, user interface, and data management. But Microsoft eventually plans to add support for areas like audio and video, graphics and animation, security, and performance.

Here's How Android Could Help Google Get Business Customers (GOOG, MSFT)

android

Google is gradually adding more ties between Android and Google Apps, two of the four products it hopes will drive growth.

By making sure the products work well together, Google could use Android's popularity to help sell Google Apps to companies who might otherwise stick with more traditional enterprise software from the likes of Microsoft.

It also shows once again the real reason why Microsoft needs a competitive mobile offering.

Here's what Google announced today:

  • Employees who use Google Apps for Business or Education will be able to locate lost Android phones on a map and reset their passwords and PINs remotely.
  • A new Android app, Google Contacts Lookup, will let Google Apps users type or speak the name or email address of any user in their organization to look them up on their phone.
  • Google Apps admins will be able to force Android 3.0 tablet users to use encrypted storage, so company secrets can't leak out via lost or stolen tablets.

None of the improvements are spectacular game changers. But if Google keeps adding a few improvements like this every year, it could give them another selling point for Apps.

There’s no question that sharing media is on the minds of many.. indeed you could almost say that sharing your digital media (photos and videos) is a requirement of any business trying to tell their story. Google Offers To Help Your Parents Use Their Computer

Google Teach Parents Tech

Google has a condescending new Web site that lets users create a canned e-mail message for their parents with links to 30 instructional videos on how to perform simple computing tasks like copying and pasting, sharing photos, and changing the clock.

The videos are not bad: they're all under one minute long, and they're not too shameless about plugging Google products--the video on how to create a blog mentions Wordpress alongside Blogger, and the video on browser updates includes a demonstration of Firefox as well as Chrome. Other videos, like changing the wallpaper on the PC, don't have any Google links at all.

Unfortunately, the site asks you to send the links within a email that explains how "shocked" or "impressed" you are that your parents are using their computer. A word to the wise: even if your parents seem like total idiots when it comes to the computer, nobody wants to be treated like an idiot--it's probably better to create a personal email message and embed the links yourself.
