Open.org an Open Source for your Open queries. Is that all?

A week ago, a question was raised by the latest owners of Open.org who go by the name Linux Fund organization, and we are still unsure if we have an answer to that question yet. The question was “What do we do with Open.org?” The question came up on the evening February 25th during a Birds of a Feather session at the Southern California Linux Expo. By now, most of the Open Source followers and enthusiasts know that the domain name of Open.org was recently acquired by Linux Fund from the City of Salem, Orgeon. The primary purpose for which the domain was used by Salem was for a kids-to-internet program named The Orgeon Public Education Network. The amount of money that was spent to acquire it is not disclosed yet and it was an auction at which the domain was purchased by Linux Fund.

How Open Source Might Finally Become Mainstream

geegel writes "The Wall Street Journal has a very interesting article on how autocracies are now embracing open source, while at the same promoting national based IT services. The author, Evgeny Morozov, paints a bleak future of the future World Wide Web."

Cooks Source Magazine Apologizes — Sort Of

taco8982 writes "Cooks Source has published a statement in response to the uproar over claiming the web is public domain a couple of weeks ago. While it does contain an apology, I'll leave it to individual readers to determine how apologetic it actually is." It also seems that the publisher has decided to cease publication entirely.

Where does Open Source Software get its Payment from?

It always seems like a question that could have multiple answers. And it is actually true that the question of ‘Who really pays for Open Source Software?’ does not comprise of just one answer, in that there is not just one source of revenue for Open Source. It really is a tough task to track the fund flow for Open Source Software, especially when it is available at zero cost and when it cannot be sold.

Apple Joins OpenJDK To Open Source Mac OS X Java Technology

Apple just announced that it is joining Oracle's OpenJDK project to open source the Java technology for Mac OS X. OpenJDK is a free and open source implementation of the Java programming language. According to the release, Apple will "contribute most of the key components, tools and technology required for a Java SE 7 implementation on Mac OS X, including a 32-bit and 64-bit HotSpot-based Java virtual machine, class libraries, a networking stack and the foundation for a new graphical client." Set up your own routing web application using OpenStreetMap data and open source software

Did I mention that I love OpenStreetMap? It’s not just the map that looks more beautiful and complete every day, but also all the neat things it allows people to do with the raw data which is free for anyone to pick up and use. This is not usually something I engage in myself – suum quique – but it does feel good to get your hands dirty with some open data and open source software once in a while.

Symbian: A Lesson on the Wrong Way to Use Open Source

The Register’s Andrew Orlowski recently offered a hopeful eulogy for Symbian, the still-dominant but fading mobile operating system that Nokia took open source in 2008. Nokia hoped to revive Symbian’s importance, which once dominated more than 50 percent of the mobile market, by reinvigorating its developer base in light of a rush of Linux-based operating platforms like Android and LiMo. It hoped in vain.

A personalized Open Source Time Machine takes you ‘Back to the Future’

Dan's Time Machine is a working prototype for the moment, which is quite similar to the clock however instead of portraying the correct and present time, reflects 'the user's own sense of time'.
