Free Windows Phones From Microsoft Stores Today (MSFT)

HTC Surround

Microsoft's retail outlets aren't nearly as widespread as they ought to be, but if you're an AT&T subscriber and you live in one of the seven cities with a Microsoft store, you can walk in today and get a free phone running Windows Phone 7.

The stores are offering the LG Quantum or HTC Surround--which boasts an unusual pull-out speaker for listening to music--for $0 when customers renew their AT&T contract for two years. That's better than the buy one, get one free deal that AT&T is offering today. Amazon previously offered these phones for a penny.

The Microsoft stores will also sell T-Mobile subscribers an HTC HD7 for only $100, although that deal's also available at Best Buy.

Microsoft was also offering $250 off the HP Pavilion dm3 laptop in the online Microsoft Store today--it normally costs $649--but it's already out of stock. There might still be some available in the physical stores, though.

Other deals that last through the weekend include a free Zune HD 16GB player with the purchase of a new PC and discounts on Office and Xbox games.

Yardsellr Scores $5 Million Series A From Accel To Become The eBay Of Facebook

Bringing social commerce to Facebook is a big opportunity attracting a lot of capital these days. Social swap meet Yardsellr just raised a $5 million series A financing, led by Accel Partners. Harrison Metal Capital, which previously put up $750,000 in seed funding, also participated. Yardsellr is an eBay for Facebook, except without the auctions. In fact, the company was founded by three former eBay executives, CEO Daniel Leffel (a former manager at eBay), VP of Marketing Jed Clevenger (who used to run the paid search team at eBay), and VP of Community Rachel Makool (who used to run the community team at eBay). Investor Michael Dearing of Harrison Metal is also a former SVP of eBay.com. Yardsellr is currently run out of the Harrison Metal office in Palo Alto.

BoxIt, CircleIt, and more scripts for Illustrator from van Willigen

Daniel van Willigen from Panoramic Designs in Holland has several great scripts for Adobe Illustrator that run in versions CS3 and above. He started off with BoxIt and CircleIt which create fields of 3d bars and cylinders. His latest include TotallyTwisted for making the type of fine lithography geometric patterns found in the background of currency, and TraceVectorToScript for recreating drawn artwork programmatically with JavaScript commands. Very helpful if you need to generate a company logo or some other artwork as part of an automated process.

Sulfur dioxide from Mount Merapi

This image maps sulphur dioxide emissions from the erupting Mount Merapi volcano in Indonesia: “This image shows concentrations of sulfur dioxide on November 4–8, 2010, as observed by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA’s Aura spacecraft.
