How Does Gps Change Us?

That's the name of a discussion over Slashdot: How Does GPS Change Us?

Their summary: ""People have talked for a while about the effects of GPS on our driving ability and our sense of direction; one researcher at McGill has even been developing an exercise regimen to compensate for our supposedly atrophying navigational ability. But is GPS reshaping our lives in a more fundamental sense? The author of this new essay draws on science, sociology, and literature to argue that GPS is transforming how we think about travel and exploration. How can we discover 'the new' in an age when everything around us is mapped?" My own experience is that GPS has made me much more aware of location, by showing me the bird's-eye view, and letting me instantly compare alternate routes."

Apple Makes Another Play For The Enterprise: Old Navy Testing iPod-Based Point-Of-Sale System (AAPL, GPS)

Old Navy Apple credit card system

Apple is making a huge play at the enterprise market via iOS: Not just the typical corporate market you think of, like getting big companies to buy Macs instead of Dells, but actually getting companies to use iOS devices as part of their business infrastructure.

The latest example: Old Navy, the clothing retailer, is testing out iPod-based point-of-sale systems in its stores, 9to5Mac reports. These are the same little iPod touch-based credit card swiping systems that you see used in Apple's own retail stores.

Who knows if this will become widespread, but it's a huge potential new market for Apple.

And not just Apple doing it directly, but also via iOS software partners, such as the company we found offering an iPad- and SMS-based table-waiting service at a San Francisco restaurant.

Microsoft Aims To Improve Maps With GPS Data

From an engadget story : "Microsoft's already added a Taxi Fare Calculator to Bing Maps to help keep your cabbie in check, and it's now actually enlisted the help of some 33,000 Beijing cab drivers in an effort to further improve driving directions. More specifically, it's relying on GPS data collected from the cab drivers' cars over a period of three months, which has since been funneled into a system called T-Drive created by a team at Microsoft Research Asia."

GPS Tracklog Reviews DeLorme GPS/Communicator Combo

DeLorme PN-60w and SPOT satellite communicator GPS Tracklog has a two-part review of the DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w GPS receiver and SPOT satellite communicator combo: the SPOT review went up last month; the PN-60w review showed up this morning. The SPOT communicator allows you to send text messages or an SOS from remote areas; Rich calls this “almost a must have for those of us venturing far off the beaten track.” As for the PN-60w, it’s comparable in performance to recent Garmin units (Oregon 450, GPSMAP 62 series) but has a smaller screen; he’s also reluctant to recommend it to first-time GPS buyers.

GPS Review Has a Love-Hate Relationship with Geocaching

GPS Review’s love-hate relationship with geocaches: “[L]ately I’ve become a bit turned off by caches placed in places where they simply shouldn’t be. While each area is different, I’d say more than half of the geocaches I’ve visited in recent years are located in places where I just don’t think a geocache belongs.” Such as caches that are too far off the marked trail or in improper terrain, that trigger bomb scares, or that are placed too closely near other caches.
