Google Lat Long Blog: Street View: Our biggest update yet

Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 10:25 AM

Since we launched Street View on Google Maps in the U.S. in 2007 we’ve added 26 more countries and enabled you to explore images across all seven continents. Today we’re excited to share with you the latest expansion of Street View because it’s our biggest update yet.

New imagery is now available for 13 of our established Street View countries: Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Romania, South Africa, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

I like wine so I’m particularly interested in seeing the new imagery around Italy’s famous Chianti region and other beautiful areas of Tuscany. Across the mediterranean in Spain, the home of another renowned wine is available with the addition of the Rioja province.

Pechina, Rioja Region, Spain

And as a food lover I’m keen on discovering Denmark’s beautiful chain of Smålands Islands - famous for its fruits that have inspired many Danish chefs and the new Nordic cuisine movement. In neighbouring Sweden there has been a significant increase in coverage across the country with Lake Siljan now included, along with the popular tourist towns of Rättvik, Leksand and Mora.

Leksand, Sweden

The southernmost tip of Africa is also now available with the addition of South Africa’s Cape Agulhas. The cape is where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet and is notoriously hazardous for sailors.

And across the other side of the world, you can view the Pacific Ocean from Japan’s Hahajima, one of the remote Ogasawara islands.

Haha-Jima, Japan

In addition, this latest batch of street-level imagery includes higher resolution panoramic views of places throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego. This is great for both locals and potential visitors of these popular California destinations, who can now see even more realistic views of landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Staples Center, and USS Midway.

Golden Gate Bridge, California

Of course, these are just a few of the many fascinating places in today’s release of new Street View imagery, so we encourage you to look around and virtually experience them for yourself right in Google Maps. Be it for armchair travel from the comfort of your computer, or to figure out where you might want to visit on your next vacation, we’re thrilled to continue our expansion of Street View.

Apple Finally Responds To Malware Attacks On Mac With Software Update (AAPL)

steve jobs

After legions of people fell for the MacDefender trojan trap within the past couple weeks, Apple decided to make a statement.

Its first statement was telling Geniuses and customer support representatives to keep their hands off when customers would complain.

Apple's second statement came yesterday, when it released a support document explicitly explaining how to remove the malware from your system.

The document also says, "In the coming days, Apple will deliver a Mac OS X software update that will automatically find and remove Mac Defender malware and its known variants.  The update will also help protect users by providing an explicit warning if they download this malware."

If you have MacDefender, MacProtector, or MacSecurity, use these steps to remove the malware:

Removal steps (from Apple's Support Document)

  • Move or close the Scan Window
  • Go to the Utilities folder in the Applications folder and launch Activity Monitor
  • Choose All Processes from the pop up menu in the upper right corner of the window
  • Under the Process Name column, look for the name of the app and click to select it; common app names include: MacDefender, MacSecurity or MacProtector
  • Click the Quit Process button in the upper left corner of the window and select Quit
  • Quit Activity Monitor application
  • Open the Applications folder
  • Locate the app ex. MacDefender, MacSecurity, MacProtector or other name
  • Drag to Trash, and empty Trash

Malware also installs a login item in your account in System Preferences. Removal of the login item is not necessary, but you can remove it by following the steps below.

  • Open System Preferences, select Accounts, then Login Items
  • Select the name of the app you removed in the steps above ex. MacDefender, MacSecurity, MacProtector
  • Click the minus button

The Most Beautiful Game In The App Store Gets A Massive Update (AAPL)

Infinity Blade

Infinity Blade is not only one of the most graphically impressive games in the App Store, but it's also one of the most fun.

We've spent countless hours slashing our way (in slow-mo, of course) through battles with giant beasts and demons alike.

The game is easy to learn, but is  difficult to become a true master at.

If you haven't bought Infinity Blade yet, now might be the time, because developer Chair Entertainment is adding multiplayer, survival mode, and a few other goodies like new swords and rings.

When you play against a friend, one of you will be able to control the giant beast, while the other controls the knight. In survival mode, you'll see how long you can go without dying.

The new multiplayer element should add tons of replay value to the title, and makes it definitely worth the $2.99 if you're a fan of epic sword battles.

Oh, and this game looks unbelievable on the iPad 2.

Update Your iPhone NOW To Stop It From Tracking Your Location

steve jobs

Apple today released iOS 4.3.3 which effectively addresses "Locationgate," a recent scandal where Apple was accused of tracking iPhone users.

Sync your phone with iTunes right now to get it, then turn off "Location Services" in Settings if you want the phone-tracking to end.

Of course, turning off Location Services also kills location awareness in all of your apps, too.

If you don't turn off Location Services, your iPhone will now contain a much smaller database of location data anyway.

Apple claims to have never tracked users, only using the location data to improve call latency and service.

Apple also called certain aspects of location-caching on the iPhone "a bug."

Regardless, Apple decided to give in and make the location database smaller, even though Apple claimed the databases were anonymous and encrypted. The biggest change in this update is that your location data will no longer back up to iTunes whenever you sync your iPhone.

As officially announced by Apple, 4.3.3 (4.2.8 for Verizon iPhones) will include:

  • The update will no longer backup location data in iTunes
  • The size of the location database will be much smaller, only containing data for the last seven days
  • When Location Services are turned off, the iPhone will not record location data, and the location database will be deleted.

Head over to iTunes now to grab the latest software update which addresses some controversial issues.
