Here's How Mark Zuckerberg Built Facebook Into A $50+ Billion Company

Mark Zuckerberg eyes

Bloomberg TV aired a "Game Changers" episode about Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday night.

The one-hour documentary offered an excellent look inside the making of Facebook, featuring interviews with many of the key players (although Zuckerberg himself "declined to participate.")

Part of Bloomberg's description:

"From rarely seen footage shot on location inside the company's corporate headquarters in 2005, to interviews with billionaire technology investor Yuri Milner and former Chief Privacy Officer Chris Kelly, Bloomberg Television examines Zuckerberg's fast track from geeky computer science student to CEO, and looks at what could lie ahead for the $50 billion privately held company."

We watched the show and picked out some of the best parts. We tried to focus on lesser known facts

(Disclosure: Business Insider's Nicholas Carlson is quoted throughout the piece because he has been influential in the reporting of the Facebook story.)

"He's always had friends. He's a pretty social guy. I think the last time I checked, I think, 879 friends on Facebook?" - Journalist Jose Antonio Vargas

"He comes from an unbelievably supportive family... He's kind of a prince. And I think his parents in fact called him the prince." - The Facebook Effect author David Kirkpatrick

"At the same time, as he was getting in trouble for building a mischievous web tool, he built a mischievous web tool that was really, really popular." - Business Insider deputy editor Nicholas Carlson on Facemash

CHART OF THE DAY: The Government Money That Built The Internet Is Going Away

Total US tech R&D spending as a percentage of GDP is below where it was for much of the 1960s, according to Kleiner Perkins partner Mary Meeker's analysis of USA Inc.

That's mostly because government spending on tech research is way down.

Right now, private investment is almost making up for it. That's nice, but remember: private investment maybe have given us Facebook and Garmin, but public sector investment gave us the Internet and GPS.

Meeker makes a strong case that more government investment in tech, education, and infrustracture, will be a key part of turning the USA around.

Flickr Should Have Built Instagram. But They Didn’t. Here’s Why.

Back in June, we reported on the departure of Kellan Elliott-McCrea from Yahoo. While not hugely known outside the developer community, we had received several tips indicating just how important Elliott-McCrea was to the Flickr team, where his role as "Architect" was supposedly "vital" to the service. So who better to answer questions about Flickr than Elliott-McCrea (who is now the VP of Engineering for Etsy), right? And that's exactly what he's done on Quora. Specifically, someone asked the question: Why did Flickr miss the mobile photo opportunity that Instagram and picplz are pursuing? The mobile photo space is red-hot right now with several players beyond the two mentioned vying to become a common app on smartphones. And one of them, Instagram, was able to gain over a million users in less than three months. So why wasn't Flickr, with all the resources of Yahoo behind them, able to dominate this space first?

How Steve Jobs Built An Empire And Then Lost It Overnight (AAPL)

Gamechangers Steve Jobs Biography

At 23, Steve Jobs had more money then his parents would ever make and, as the cofounder of Apple Computer, a product that would change the world forever.

A couple years later, he holed himself up in a 17,000 square-foot mansion without furniture, and drove a team of crack engineers mad, pushing them to build the Macintosh.

By the time he was 30, the dream was over and Jobs was on the street, fired from the company he helped to build.

In its compelling new documentary series, Game Changers, Bloomberg TV tells the story of how Jobs lost Apple and then won it back – becoming the world's most powerful innovator in the process.
