RockMelt For iPhone Isn't What You'd Expect From A Mobile Browser, Here's Why That's A Good Thing

RockMelt's mobile browser for iPhone is live in the App Store.

The social browser is not what you'd expect, and that's a good thing.

Instead of being taken to the web, RockMelt shows you a feed of Facebook, Twitter, and RSS updates when you launch.

This is pretty unique for a browser, but RockMelt's mission is to show you news and updates that's relevant to you.

The iPhone version syncs with your desktop's RockMelt browser, so logging in to your Facebook account will bring up the same RSS feeds, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. (If you don't use the desktop version of RockMelt, check out our review here).

You can download RockMelt now for free in the App Store. Click the link below for a tour of the app in action.

Here's the RockMelt icon. Tap to launch the app.

You'll be prompted to log in to Facebook. Enter your information and tap "Login"

RockMelt will sync with your desktop version (if you have it). This takes a few seconds.

RockMelt Mobile, The Demo Video

RockMelt, the social browser, came out with an iPhone app today. If you are familiar with RockMelt, which opened up publicly last month after much of its initial fanfare died down, it adds feeds and streams along the righthand rail. RockMelt Mobile is essentially this right-hand rail repackaged as a mobile app. Co-founder and CTO Tim Howes showed it to me recently (watch the video). RockMelt Mobile expands that rail into all of your favorite feeds, both news and social. In one place you can read your Twitter and Facebook streams, as well as RSS feeds from your favorite sites. Web pages can be saved for later, or shared via Facebook. The app also gives you access to your bookmarks. And like Mobile Firefox, it syncs with the desktop browser.

Behold RockMelt, Browser For The Social Set

RockMelt, a Mountain View, Calif.-based start-up with backing from the likes of Marc Andreessen has made a new socially-aware, media consumption centric browser that is available in beta soon. The company says its browser is optimized for the modern web and focuses on making sharing easy.
