How To Prevent Another Spam Attack From Google+ (GOOG)

Google's servers for Google+ ran out of space this weekend, causing users to be bombarded with repeated notifications e-mails.

By default, Google+ will e-mail you when there's activity on you account, just like Facebook does. Even when everything is working fine, that can still get annoying if you're a popular person on the young social network.

Here's how to turn e-mail alerts off:

• Click the "Options" gear symbol on the upper right corner of your screen. Select "Google+ Settings."

• Click the "Google+ tab" and scroll down to the "Receive Notifications" section.

• Uncheck the activities you don't want to receive notifications for. (We suggest unchecking all of them to avoid another spamming incident.)

On June 26th,diTii reported thata number of Facebook developers when logged into the site greeted with ahorrible news: their applications had suddenly been disabled without warning. The culprit was Facebook's spam-fighting bot.

SPAM Comes To LinkedIn

A tech industry veteran received the message below in his LinkedIn inbox this morning.

He forwarded it on to us with the following note:

My first linkedin spam message! Here is a quick and absolutely guaranteed way for them to turn me off to the service.

The salesperson who sent the note is apparently a couple of degrees removed from the tech industry veteran. And he apparently can't even be bothered to customize his sales pitches when he spams friends of friends.

Now Google Is Helping You Block Search Spam With New Chrome Extension (GOOG)

Last week we told you about a custom code that will let you filter spam results from your Google search.

Today, Google is helping you out with a Chrome extension that makes this much easier.

The Personal Blocklist Extension lets you choose domain names to block and omits them from your Google search results. The sites are also sent to Google to help them determine which sites are actually spam.

After installing the extension, each search result will have a link next to it that says "block." Click it to add that domain to your block list.

Google warns that the extension is still "experimental" and should only be installed by the tech-savvy users.

You can download the Personal Blocklist for Chrome here. There's no word from Google about the extension coming to other browsers.

Facebook Updates Ad System, Adds "Sponsored Stories" So You Can Spam Your Friends Better

Facebook has rolled out an upgrade to its self-serve ad system that includes its new ad format, "Sponsored Stories", All Facebook points out.

The idea behind Sponsored Stories is to turn your Likes into ads. When you like something on Facebook and someone has bought an ad for it, that story will be broadcast to your friends.

Facebook announced the product last month but now it's part of their self-serve ad system so anyone can buy them.

The other major piece of this upgrade is that it lets advertisers select which tap of their fan page people who click on the ad will land on. So now you can split-test what people land on and optimize your campaigns better.
