My friends and I are the exact opposite. There's more of a gaming element to Gowalla for us with the stamps and items. We just have fun with it, don't take it too seriously, and don't bother fighting with random people in NYC for mayorships of places we frequent.
Hopefully Gowalla will stay in the game and keep developing their application regardless of what Foursquare and the others do. While there are basic things that make it lots like the other LBS apps, I've found that Gowalla is great for a single-player travel journal experience, especially in a city when you're visiting lots of new places.
