CHART OF THE DAY: Android Users Are Bigger Data Hogs Than Anyone (AAPL, GOOG, T, VZ)

Remember when people would talk about AT&T's network being crushed by iPhone users and all the data those users needed for websites and apps? And people would say that's why AT&T's network was so weak?

Well, we never heard those complaints about Verizon when it got a bunch of Android users. And it turns out Android users are bigger data hogs than anyone else, including iPhone users, according to Nielsen.

Meet The Man In Charge Of Making Hollywood Not Hate Google (GOOG, NFLX)

robert kyncl google

Robert Kyncl is VP, TV and Film Entertainment at Google, which means he must convince the Hollywood studios that Google doesn't want to destroy them, and thereby get them to license their content to YouTube.

It's pretty interesting to see how he does, because before that he did the same job superbly at Netflix.

The LA Times profiled Kyncl and here's what we learned:

  • Like so many in Hollywood, Kyncl got his start in the mailroom, and then worked up his way to dealmaking;

  • At Netflix, he was the guy behind some of the big content partnerships that got Netflix's streaming service off the ground, and since joining Google eight months ago he got studios to sign off on YouTube movie rentals;

  • YouTube sees its strategy as resting on three legs: user-generated content, content produced for the web, and licenced media;

  • One of the ways YouTube wants to get people to watch longer and highlight more content is to "create themed channels that combine original online content with a curated selection of amateur videos," especially on niche topics you might not get to see on TV.

    What's Killing Your Wi-Fi?

    Barence writes "PC Pro has taken an in-depth look at Wi-Fi and the factors that can cause connections to crumble. It dispels some common myths about Wi-Fi problems — such as that neighboring Wi-Fi hotspots are the most common cause of problems, instead of other RF interference from devices such as analogue video senders, microwave ovens and even fish tanks. The feature also highlights free and paid-for tools that can diagnose Wi-Fi issues, such as inSSIDer and Heatmapper, the latter of which maps provides a heatmap of Wi-Fi hotspots in your home or office."

    The first dual-core Android tablets only arrived in February, but Nvidia is already showing off an improved quad-core chip that’s expected to power tablets by August. The system-on-a-chip, codenamed “Kal-El,” has four computer cores and a dozen graphics processors that will offer a huge performance boost in mobile devices. Nvidia announced the chip in February, with support for 1440p video playback, which is higher than most HDTV sets.

    (Founder Stories) Gilt’s Kevin Ryan—It Is All In The Presentation (TCTV)

    Chris Dixon wraps his Founder Stories interview with Gilt Groupe’s CEO and Founder, Kevin Ryan by discussing the early sales strategy of Gilt - a strategy that was designed to build customer and brand loyalty, but not the bottom line, at least initially. Revisiting the launch period around four years ago, Ryan says, "we were going to make $4,000 for us on a sale and I spent $7,000 on the photo shoot, and you would say that is not a good business model, but what happened was the brands loved it, the customers loved it ... and so now we sell $100,000, $200,000, $300,000 .... on a sale."

    LEAKED PHOTO: Is This Google's Next Nexus Phone? (GOOG)

    nexus 3

    A leaked photo of what is supposedly a test model of Google's next Nexus phone started circulating today after the blog Tech Hog claims to have snagged it from an inside source.

    The photo has since been removed from Tech Hog, but we managed to snag a copy here.

    The phone has no room for the four home keys found on other phones, which leads us to believe the next version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, will have on-screen controls.

    It's highly unlikely this is the final model of the Nexus 3, but Tech Hog said in its original post it was being developed by HTC. (HTC developed the original Nexus One phone.)
