Comment on Why “Web vs. Native” Isn’t a Black-and-White Battle by John

The main reason that local apps still win over web apps is that most web apps still have to download all their elements to work because devices offline casches are too small. This really sucks when you have poor signal. I dont mind if I have to wait 30 or 40 seconds for a facebook update, but I do care if it takes that long just to log in. The benifit of a small portable device is lost if you spend you life waiting for the apps to load and work. I like apps liek tripit - whcih most of the complicated stuff is done on a web page, ut the iOS app is fast, caches the data, and shows you what you need quickly, even if it has no net connection - perfect when trying to find your flight number before you check in, or the hotel booking reservation numbers etc. This would suck as web only.

Comment on Why Microsoft is Buying Skype for $8.5 Billion by John

INteresting, Microsoft actaull has a good video and phone service in MS Communicator, but this is aimed at businesses, and is tied up with MS Comms Server. They finally had a Mac client out with Office for Mac, so both those platforms had working clients, only Linux, and iOS etc was left out in the cold, but no reason why clients couldnt be developed. All they are getting with Skype is the peer to peer transmission method and all the IP that goes into it, but not much of it could be applied to office comms whih is actually fairly well sandards based, only the authentication scheme it used was proprietary. So unless they want to buy it to halt development of skype clients on other platforms, so MS can turn it into their own Facetime competitor? BTW, I really want a Facetime cleint for Windows, and have it allowe over 3G from my phone, then it would be AWESOME! At the momement, Facetime is crippled by these artificial limits. It works fine of 3G here in NZ, as my iPad teathered through my phone works perfectly. Why can't I just do it from my Phone, Apple?? I end up using Skype instead, because then My wife can use here Windows PC, and I don't have to mess with teathering the Pad.

Comment on What the Angry Birds Rio Exclusive on Amazon Android Store Means by Thomas John

I like the play on words: Amazon.com and Amazon River (Rio) which flows through Brazil. It'll be interesting to see how well the Amazon app store interacts with Android. If it's easy to use and install apps, it'll have potential. If not, well...

Comment on Cord Cutters: Turn Your PC Into a Media Center by John

Another PC option is to buy a relatively inexpensive nettop optimized for use in a media center. I recently bought an Acer AspireRevo, which has an HDMI out jack, an Atom CPU, and an Nvidia video chip optimized to run video offloaded from the main CPU, such as Flash has done since version 10.1. It's about the size of a large router, and either stands on its end, or can be mounted on the back of your TV/monitor if mounting holes are present. I installed Boxee from the beginning, which has worked great for streaming various web videos, although it has been partially blocked from Hulu. I bought the 3200 model of the Revo for $300 right before it was phased out, but even the current 3700 is selling for only around $350. Admittedly, the much cheaper Boxee or Roku boxes would allow me access to much the same video content, but when there is a block for whatever reason, I've been able to revert to a regular browser and view to my heart's content. And with both Hulu and Netflix, the browser has been my main avenue of viewing. With Flash 10.1 and the Nvidia chip, I've had no problem viewing even high def videos. For a remote, I've installed both HippoRemote and the Boxee remote apps on my iPod Touch. Hippo has specialized setups for various apps and web sites, including Boxee, and I use it almost exclusively. The SAF (spouse acceptance factor) may limit our just yet cutting the cord, plus the fact shows like _Walking Dead_ have no free immediate streaming option, but it's definitely possible. Thanks for _Cord Cutters_!

LivingSocial's John Bax On Google's Near $6 Billion Bid For Groupon: "I Think They Are Underpaying"

pipeline_ignition_400x300

I think [Google is] getting a steal, I think they underpaying," said LivingSocial's John Bax at today's IGNITION: The Future of Media conference, in reference to Google's near $6 billion bid for Groupon, which some have called wildly excessive. "[Groupon] should hold out for $12 billion or $18 billion..."

Bax was half-joking, but he went on to discuss the value of the social commerce business. "No one has cracked local advertising, a lot of people are trying different angles... Groupon works with tens of thousands of local businesses, they are generating a lot of cash.”

"The most well-read publication now might be Groupon," said Ben Lerer, the CEO of Thrillist, who was also part of the same IGNITION panel discussion.

"I don’t think $6 billion is a crazy price,” said Bax. “I think it might be cheap."

Comment on Should We Be Afraid of Apple, Google and Facebook? by John Conor

The US DoJ uses a particular test to determine if a firm has monopoly power - the Herfindahl - Hirschmann index (HHI). Using this as the sole indicator, and thinking reasonably carefully about the markets in which each plays (search and web-delivered ads for the first, 'social network' connections for the second): Google and Facebook absolutely have monopoly power. The answers for the others are less clear. I have not read Prof. Wu's book (and can't get it except, ahem, to my Kindle, since I live in Asia), so cannot tell if he used the DoJ numerical definition, or how precisely he used term monopoly at all.

Comment on Politics Matter: Verizon Picks West Virginia for LTE Launch by John Ramella

I live 5 miles outside of Lewisburg WV... no access to cable TV, lot too wooded for satellite dish, sporadic 3G coverage from AT&T;, neighbor's Verizon coverage even worse. Who says USA isn't a third world country?

Comment on iPad 2: A Clearer Picture of What to Expect by John

I'd like to see a higher resolution screen but it seems very difficult. This is not like increasing the resolution of a laptop screen. The iPad apps are designed to work at the current resolution. That is why on the iPhone they could quadruple the number of pixels. Doubling the x and y resolution made it easy to change the apps. Perhaps they'll find a way around this and we'll see an intermediate increase in resolution. More likely this will have to wait for 2012. Anyway, likely the screen quality will increase with the same number of pixels.
