THE TRUTH ABOUT SMARTPHONES: Our Exclusive Survey On iPhone vs Android

smartphone

Recent news that Android has blasted past the iPhone in smartphone market share triggered a huge brawl among fans in both camps about whether the numbers were accurate and which platform would reign supreme.

In light of this, we wanted to find out more about what makes people choose one platform over the other. So we wrote up a smartphone survey, which received more than 2,000 responses.

We've included the specific questions and responses in the slides that follow.

Here are the key points:

  • Almost all of the survey participants already use smartphones
  • Most survey participants are planning to upgrade to a new smartphone in the next year or two.
  • Most participants say they will upgrade to the "latest, greatest" smartphone, not an older, cheaper one.
  • Most survey participants are NOT planning to switch platforms when they upgrade
  • Most participants say "features" and "platform" are the most important factors when choosing a smartphone. App selection is also important, but not as important as most people think.
  • Most iPhone owners say they would buy an Android phone if there was an Android phone that was better in most key ways than an iPhone. This suggests the iPhone's feature lead still matters. It also suggests that the Apple platform does not have the "lock-in" that many Apple bulls believe. It also increases the pressure on the iPhone 5 to be a humdinger of an upgrade.
  • Most Android users say they won't consider buying an iPhone because they "hate Apple."  (We'll explore why in a future survey).
  • Most of the rest of Android users say they would consider buying an iPhone if iPhones worked better with non-Apple products.  This highlights the risk of Apple's closed system.
  • Most iPhone owners already have the iPhone 4.
  • Most iPhone owners are still planning to upgrade to the iPhone 5.

Almost all of our survey participants already own smartphones.

Most participants own Android phones. Most of the rest own iPhones. Relative to recent market-share figures, Android and iPhone seem a bit over-represented and BlackBerry under-represented

Most participants plan to upgrade to the latest, greatest smartphone in the next year or two.

WHY WOULD ANYONE EVER BUY AN ANDROID PHONE? Take Our Smartphone Survey And Tell Us!

Google Android has come out of nowhere in the last couple of years to dominate the smartphone industry.

Is Google's dominance going to continue? Or will Apple's move to sell the iPhone with more carriers -- especially Verizon in the U.S. -- neutralize the Android threat?

We'd love to learn more about your smartphone purchasing thoughts. Do you have a smartphone now? Will you buy one soon? Which kind? And why?

Please fill out our survey below. We'll publish the results in a few days.

GROUPON SURVEY RESULTS: Everything You Need To Know About How People Use Daily Deals

andrew mason

With Groupon generating multiple billions this year in sales, and on track for a $25 billion IPO, we thought it would be good to take a look at how people are really using the daily coupon service.

Last week we surveyed readers about Groupon and daily deals sites. We received 943 responses. Of that, 811 people said they subscribe to Groupon.

From there we filtered our results to only count those who said they use Groupon. What follows is our analysis of the results.

The key takeaways:

  • Groupon is in a very competitive space. Of the people that use Groupon, 72% say they subscribe to LivingSocial as well. Sounds bad, but this could be an industry with a few players, not a winner take all.
  • Groupon is generating over $50 per person in gross sales from 65% of the people we polled. Considering it has 50 million users and growing, that's very good.
  • Our respondents think they will use Groupon less in the future than they do today. Suggests to us Groupon has to deliver better deals and products.

The vast majority of our readers, who are a tech savvy bunch, said they use Groupon. (Plus, few people are going to click into a survey about Groupon if they don't use it.)

Groupon is a very young company, as reflected by the fact that 80% of the group said they have used it for less than a year.

A third of users open almost none of the Groupons they get.
