Inside RIM: The Rise And Fall Of The Company That Made Smartphones Smart

Research In Motion is in the midst of a major transition in every sense of the word. Publicly, the company is portraying a very defensive image — one that is very dismissive, as if RIM is profitable and class-leading, and the media is out of line to criticize its business, as are investors. Internally, however, there’s a different story to be told. It’s a story filled with attitude, cockiness, heated arguments among the executive team and Co-CEOs, and paranoia. We’ve spoken to multiple ex-RIM executives at length about their experiences with the company over the past few years. While most speak highly of RIM and their time in Waterloo, they also each left the company due mainly to RIM’s lack of vision and leadership. Read on for an exclusive inside look at a company teetering on the edge between greatness and collapse.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SMARTPHONES: Our Exclusive Survey On iPhone vs Android

smartphone

Recent news that Android has blasted past the iPhone in smartphone market share triggered a huge brawl among fans in both camps about whether the numbers were accurate and which platform would reign supreme.

In light of this, we wanted to find out more about what makes people choose one platform over the other. So we wrote up a smartphone survey, which received more than 2,000 responses.

We've included the specific questions and responses in the slides that follow.

Here are the key points:

  • Almost all of the survey participants already use smartphones
  • Most survey participants are planning to upgrade to a new smartphone in the next year or two.
  • Most participants say they will upgrade to the "latest, greatest" smartphone, not an older, cheaper one.
  • Most survey participants are NOT planning to switch platforms when they upgrade
  • Most participants say "features" and "platform" are the most important factors when choosing a smartphone. App selection is also important, but not as important as most people think.
  • Most iPhone owners say they would buy an Android phone if there was an Android phone that was better in most key ways than an iPhone. This suggests the iPhone's feature lead still matters. It also suggests that the Apple platform does not have the "lock-in" that many Apple bulls believe. It also increases the pressure on the iPhone 5 to be a humdinger of an upgrade.
  • Most Android users say they won't consider buying an iPhone because they "hate Apple."  (We'll explore why in a future survey).
  • Most of the rest of Android users say they would consider buying an iPhone if iPhones worked better with non-Apple products.  This highlights the risk of Apple's closed system.
  • Most iPhone owners already have the iPhone 4.
  • Most iPhone owners are still planning to upgrade to the iPhone 5.

Almost all of our survey participants already own smartphones.

Most participants own Android phones. Most of the rest own iPhones. Relative to recent market-share figures, Android and iPhone seem a bit over-represented and BlackBerry under-represented

Most participants plan to upgrade to the latest, greatest smartphone in the next year or two.

ESRI Canada Brings Interactive Maps to BlackBerry Smartphones with Freeance Mobile

GIS Provider to Exclusively Distribute TDC's Mobile Solution in Canada, Enabling BlackBerry Users to View and Edit Maps and Data on the Move

TORONTO – November 10, 2010 – ESRI Canada today announced that the company has signed an agreement to become the exclusive Canadian distributor of TDC Group's Freeance Mobile for BlackBerry.  The solution helps organizations maximize their investment in ESRI's geographic information system (GIS) technology by pushing out GIS data and applications to field workers using BlackBerry smartphones.  Users can search, view and edit data and maps stored in their enterprise GIS while on the move, reducing costs and increasing productivity and efficiency.

“The ubiquity of BlackBerry smartphones makes them ideal devices for extending enterprise GIS to the field,” said Alex Miller, president, ESRI Canada.  “With Freeance, remote workers in every industry can easily access valuable corporate geographic information needed to make decisions on the go.  The ability to edit data in the field also ensures that there are no information gaps and that the data in their GIS is always up to date.”

Communicate GIS Data in Real Time To and From the Field
Freeance allows organizations using ESRI's ArcGIS Server technology to securely deliver maps and location-based data live to an unlimited number of BlackBerry smartphone users within the organization's network.  Field workers can capture and publish data and imagery without returning to the office to upload the information to the GIS, resulting in significant time and cost savings.  The solution also enables real-time tracking of personnel and assets, helping to ensure the safety of mobile staff and the effective deployment of resources.  Freeance is designed for organizations with a dispersed mobile workforce, including utilities, energy, business, public safety, public works and government organizations.  It enhances operations including customer service, emergency management, infrastructure management, work order management, network planning, property assessment, asset inventory and inspection.

Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI) in Atlantic Canada has deployed Freeance to enhance its electrical distribution system model, which will help enhance service reliability for its nearly half a million customers.  They use the solution to collect data about individual components of their distribution system including transformers and disconnect switches, as well as the components' precise location.   Data entered through Freeance is automatically transferred to their ArcGIS Server, and used by technicians to update the electrical model.  With a more accurate picture of their distribution system, NSPI is able to better predict and resolve outages.  “Freeance on BlackBerry allowed us to avoid the need for collectors to travel to local utility depots for data uploads each day.  Two hours saved per day for each of the 14 collectors translates into nearly $200,000 worth of labor savings,” said Brian Shannon, GIS Connectivity Project Manager, NSPI.

Licensing and Availability
Freeance is a commercial off-the-shelf software that runs as a server-based solution.  It integrates with ArcGIS Server and other enterprise systems, and can be deployed in as quickly as a few hours.  It is offered in three editions:  Freeance Pro, which  can be used to build an unlimited number of GIS applications and includes editing capabilities;  Freeance Basic, which allows the creation of up to two map applications; and Freeance View – available at no cost, this software allows you to publish and view ArcGIS maps on your BlackBerry.  The solution runs on all versions of BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry OS version 4.5 or higher.

steve jobs eric schmidt apple googleAAPL Up With Markets
Americans slowed spending in September to the weakest pace in 3 months as incomes fell by the largest amount in 14 months. Shares of AAPL aren't phased -- trading up close to $4. Upcoming catalysts include monthly NPD data (Mac / iPod business); holiday iPhone and iPad sales updates and carrier expansion; new content revenue streams such as video, books and social (Ping); moving iTunes into the cloud; and the uptake of refreshed Apple TV. AAPL trades at 14x Enterprise Value / Trailing Twelve Months Free Cash Flow (incl. long-term marketable securities).

New MacBook Air To Ship In Highest Volume Ever (AppleInsider)
Apple's new MacBook Air is supposed to ship in highest volume ever for the thin-and-light notebook, according to analyst Mingchi Kuo from Concord Securities. Some 700,000 Macs – out of the 4.1 million estimated to ship in the fall – would be ultraportables. This means 17% of the total number. Furthermore, 420,000 (60%) of them would be represented by the 11-inch model, and the analyst is confident that buyers are inclined to trade speed for size and price. Have any questions about the MacBook Air? Ask Business Insider Dan Frommer.

Asymco: Apple Pulling In 50% Of The Worldwide Cell Phone Profits (Asymco)

Market Intelligence firm Asymco helps investors visualize the effect of Apple's entry on the mobile phone market. Bottom line: Apple is selling iPhones as fast as it can make them, and is raking in huge profits in the process, while everyone else is playing catch up, says Philip Elmer-DeWitt at Fortune. Apple's worldwide cell phone market share in terms of unit sales is 4% while Apple's share of the profits (earnings before interest and taxes) is 50%.

Canalys: Android Commands 44% Market Share Versus Apple's 26% (Fortune)

Watch out Apple. The combined sales of Android handsets give Google's OS a commanding 44% smartphone market share in the third quarter, according to research firm Canalys. Apple did take the lead from Research in Motion's BlackBerry with shipments of 5.5 million iPhones in the U.S. for a 26% market share. However, Google's (GOOG) Android is winning the OS wars, shipping 9.1 million units. Read more from Business Insider here.

NPD: It's True, Android Is Clobbering The iPhone (All Things Digital)

Android is extending its lead as America’s most popular mobile operating system. NPD consumer research group says that Google’s software was installed on 44% of mobile handsets sold in the third quarter, up 11 percentage points since last quarter. Android’s gain seems to be primarily fueled by BlackBerry’s loss: Research in Motion lost 6 points in the last quarter, falling to 22%, while Apple’s iOS moved up one point, to 23%.

In Terms Of Reward For Earnings, Apple Trading In Line With S&P (Seeking Alpha)

If you had invested $100 the S&P 500 in September 2005, you would have $103 now. If you invested $100 in Apple in September 2005, you would have $529 now. However, in terms of reward for earnings, Apple doesn't seem so appealing. Although Apple received a premium valuation to the S&P prior to October 2008, it has traded at a discount or in-line with the S&P since then. Click to see accompanying charts.

Again, The Verizon iPhone Is Coming (But So Is Christmas) (Fortune)
The most talked-about cellphone in America is one that doesn't officially exist: the Verizon iPhone. Analysts estimate that Apple could sell 8 million to 9 million next year, compared with an estimated 22 million iPhones sold-to-date in the U.S. The soon-to-be-unveiled Verizon iPhone is the answer to many consumers' prayers. But a deal with Apple will test the company that Ivan Seidenberg (CEO) has spent his career building.
