Playstation Suite: Sony Brings Playstation Games To Android Phones

Meebo Brings the “Check-In” to the Web

You can “check in” to locations in the real world with your phone; now Meebo wants to bring the same idea to the web. The company, which offers a sharing toolbar that lets users connect to social networks while they surf, is launching a new version that allows them to check in to any site that offers the Meebo bar, and also allows them to follow other users and see what websites they are visiting. Available as a browser extension as of Tuesday, the company said the new features will be rolled out to all sites using the toolbar by mid-December.

TORONTO – November 10, 2010 – ESRI Canada today announced that the company has signed an agreement to become the exclusive Canadian distributor of TDC Group's Freeance Mobile for BlackBerry.  The solution helps organizations maximize their investment in ESRI's geographic information system (GIS) technology by pushing out GIS data and applications to field workers using BlackBerry smartphones.  Users can search, view and edit data and maps stored in their enterprise GIS while on the move, reducing costs and increasing productivity and efficiency.

“The ubiquity of BlackBerry smartphones makes them ideal devices for extending enterprise GIS to the field,” said Alex Miller, president, ESRI Canada.  “With Freeance, remote workers in every industry can easily access valuable corporate geographic information needed to make decisions on the go.  The ability to edit data in the field also ensures that there are no information gaps and that the data in their GIS is always up to date.”

Communicate GIS Data in Real Time To and From the Field
Freeance allows organizations using ESRI's ArcGIS Server technology to securely deliver maps and location-based data live to an unlimited number of BlackBerry smartphone users within the organization's network.  Field workers can capture and publish data and imagery without returning to the office to upload the information to the GIS, resulting in significant time and cost savings.  The solution also enables real-time tracking of personnel and assets, helping to ensure the safety of mobile staff and the effective deployment of resources.  Freeance is designed for organizations with a dispersed mobile workforce, including utilities, energy, business, public safety, public works and government organizations.  It enhances operations including customer service, emergency management, infrastructure management, work order management, network planning, property assessment, asset inventory and inspection. 

Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI) in Atlantic Canada has deployed Freeance to enhance its electrical distribution system model, which will help enhance service reliability for its nearly half a million customers.  They use the solution to collect data about individual components of their distribution system including transformers and disconnect switches, as well as the components' precise location.   Data entered through Freeance is automatically transferred to their ArcGIS Server, and used by technicians to update the electrical model.  With a more accurate picture of their distribution system, NSPI is able to better predict and resolve outages.  “Freeance on BlackBerry allowed us to avoid the need for collectors to travel to local utility depots for data uploads each day.  Two hours saved per day for each of the 14 collectors translates into nearly $200,000 worth of labor savings,” said Brian Shannon, GIS Connectivity Project Manager, NSPI.

Freeance is a commercial off-the-shelf software that runs as a server-based solution.  It integrates with ArcGIS Server and other enterprise systems, and can be deployed in as quickly as a few hours.  It is offered in three editions:  Freeance Pro, which  can be used to build an unlimited number of GIS applications and includes editing capabilities;  Freeance Basic, which allows the creation of up to two map applications; and Freeance View – available at no cost, this software allows you to publish and view ArcGIS maps on your BlackBerry.  The solution runs on all versions of BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry OS version 4.5 or higher.

Over the past few months, Facebook has come out with what two great features - Places and redesigned Groups. The only problem, however, is Places really only appears on the iPhone app and mobile website, while Groups can only be accessed from the full, non-mobile site. The two features, however, would work together perfectly, hence, Mappr.

Mappr brings two of Facebook's best recent additions together, allowing you to check-in without sharing it with everyone on Facebook - exactly what groups were made for.

Facebook groups are great for organizing strangers around common interests, and Mappr is perfect to share info on the great places for the group. Using the Mappr app, you can filter to see just places where a particular group has checked in. Adding a group to a check-in provides a great way to help other group members find these places.

The app took just a minute to set up, allowing me to connect with my Facebook, Foursquare and Twitter accounts. It displays places by map and list view, showing a star where Foursquare specials are available, and has all the Foursquare tips.

If you have Facebook and Foursquare linked so that Foursquare check-ins automatically show up on Facebook, you can now determine a group for that check-in to appear in. That is, your night club check-in can show up on a group for close friends and your convention center check-in can clue in your coworkers without boring your friends.

One of the biggest problems with all of these cross-posting services is context. Just because I want to link Foursquare to Facebook doesn't mean I want everything broadcast to everyone. Go to a geek convention and suddenly you're checking in 20 times a day and driving all of your non-techie Facebook friends crazy - this offers a solution for that.

Even beyond not driving people crazy, the ability to confine your check-in updates on Facebook to different groups of people allows for a granular control not available in popular location-based check-in apps like Foursquare or Gowalla. Quickly create a Facebook group for an event and suddenly all of your check-ins can be kept within that group. Mappr just broke a barrier with Facebook Places that we can only hope other LBS apps follow...and soon.

Shopping Site Brings Print Catalogs To The iPad

As online e-commerce continue to grow, the act of buying from shopping catalogs continues to decline. But Catalogs.com is hoping to change this trend by bringing its library of retail catalogs to the the iPad with a new, free app. The app features a magazine-like feel for shopping, including over 30 catalogs for both online and brick and mortar retailers such as MacConnection, Home Depot, Petco, Little Tikes and Spiegel. As Catalogs.com's co-founder Richard Linevsky says, it's like having a coffee table full of catalogs on the iPad.
