Here Are Even More New Mac OS X Lion Features We Just Learned About (AAPL)

lion backgroundApple released the third preview version of Mac OS X Lion, which is due to launch on Macs this summer.

Since then developers (and others with access) have been poring over the latest release for any new features Apple snuck in.

There's less than a month before Apple's WWDC keynote, where the final version of

We took a look at what they found and gathered the best new features here. Our favorite? The Instapaper-like reading lists that sync between Safari and iPhone. Very cool.

Reading List syncs with iOS devices

We knew about Reading List already, but now developers can actually use it. Of note: it syncs with your iOS devices. That should make Instapaper nervous.

Fancy new wallpapers

Cult of Mac dug up a bunch of new wallpapers that will be included in Lion. You can check the all out here.

New log in screen

The log in screen got a simple look. Now it's just a gray, metallic-like background with dark letters.

New MacBook Airs Are About To Get Even Faster (AAPL)

steve jobs macbook air tbi

Despite its relatively weak processor, the MacBook Air is pretty speedy thanks to its solid state drive.

Now Apple is switching vendors for the MacBook Air's solid state drives that will make it even faster.

Before, Apple got its MacBook Air drives from Toshiba, but the latest notebooks on sale now have drives from Samsung that have faster read and write speeds.

TUAW says the Samsung drives in the MacBook Air have read speeds at 261 MB per second versus 210 MB per second with the Toshiba drives. You probably won't notice a huge difference in side to side comparisons, but it's great that Apple is shopping around for ways to boost the Air's performance.

CHART OF THE DAY: Groupon's Big Raise Isn't Even The Biggest This Year

Want to get the Chart Of The Day a day earlier? Sign up for our Chart of the Day email.

When it's all finished, Groupon could have the second most money in its coffers of any venture backed startup in the last 20 years.

But so far it's not even in the top ten of pure venture capital raises in history, even with its big $500 million round, disclosed today.

Heck, it's not even the biggest this year. That honor goes to Better Place, the electric car startup, which raised $350 million earlier this year.

You might be saying, "isn't $350 million smaller than $500 million?" It is, but the chart below is the top ten  "new equity" venture capital raises in history. The chart comes from Dan Primack at Fortune who got the data from Pricewaterhouse Coopers and the National Venture Capital Association.

Since Groupon founders are taking $345 million out of this round, only $155 million of the money raised is new.

However, if Groupon raises $450 million more, as has been reported it could, and it all goes into the company, then Groupon will beat out DreamWorks for the top spot.

Phone SIM Locks: Why Do Carriers Even Bother?

We've been down this road before: a new iOS version is released that undoes all of the nasty stuff hackers did to the previous version. A week later those same hackers blow out a jailbreak and then a few days later they release a full unlock (the latest iOS unlock is only for 3G and 3GS right now, so iPhone 4 users are stuck for now.) Given that this is pretty much standard procedure, why don't carriers just give up? Sadly, most other phones don't get this sort of white glove treatment. A grey market exists that traffics in phone unlocks for many devices including Blackberries and Nokias. Why? Because someone, somewhere wants to move their phone from country A to country B. The vast majority of phone users will never want to this but there is still plenty of demand. So why not ship without the lock? Well, there are a few possible answers, barring the obvious "Carriers suck."

Google Lat Long Blog: Even smarter Street View navigation: single click to go (anywhere!)

Monday, November 22, 2010 at 5:35 PM

Last year we introduced Smart Navigation to Street View, which allowed you to jump to a new panorama just by double-clicking on a place or object. Now you can quickly navigate to those images with just a single click.

For those of you who haven’t used this click-to-go feature before, notice that as you move your mouse around in a street view panorama, a disk or rectangle follows the cursor (what we call the “pancake”). This pancake not only makes the panorama feel three-dimensional, but shows you where you can jump to a new panorama to get a different view. For instance, let’s say you’re checking out the town of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico because you read about the large community of artists and writers living there. You can get a closer look at the Parish of San Miguel by clicking on the pancake and navigating around the church.

A few more clicks will take you through the colorful neighboring streets. Through your virtual exploration, you can see a restaurant in the distance behind the below rectangular pancake:

With a single click on the pancake, you’re transported right in front of that location and the pancake reappears - this time with a magnifying glass. This means you can zoom in to get an even closer view:

To read the menu at “El Infierno” and see what kind of food they may have, the single click to zoom also applies here. We’ve also made it easier to zoom out. Once you’ve zoomed in all the way, the magnifying glass changes from a plus sign to a minus sign, signifying that the next click will zoom all the way out.

QUE VIVA single click navigation!
