Have It Your Way: Sparkbuy Helps You Hone In On Your Ideal Laptop

Head over to Amazon's computer section right now and you'll notice that you have quite a few choices. Thousands of them, in fact. And honing in on the one that best suits your needs can be quite a chore — especially when the data you need to make a good comparison is scattered across blogs, review sites, and electronics databases. Sparkbuy thinks there's a better way. The site, which recently closed a $1 million funding round, has set out to build a 'Kayak for consumer electronics', and it's starting with laptop computers. The gist of it: enter which criteria are important to you, and the site will give a listing of laptops that it thinks you'll like best. Sparkbuy is entering private beta tonight, and the first 500 TechCrunch readers to enter the invite code 'TCRUNCH-VIP' will gain access (make sure to click the 'Sign Up' link on the site).

Get ‘Em While They’re Hot: New “Convio Connector” Helps Care2’s Nonprofit Partners Connect with Donors Faster

Today (Tuesday, Oct. 26th) at the Convio Summit in Baltimore I joined Chris Burley of Defenders of Wildlife in a session to unveil a new online tool that Care2 built to greatly benefit our nonprofit clients. It’s called the “Convio Connector,” and we built it using Convio’s API. The new Connector allows Care2’s database to communicate directly and automatically with the database of any organization that uses Convio’s online software platform. It's free for any of our clients using Convio.

Why is this valuable to nonprofits? It has to do with speed, avoiding headaches and -- most of all – letting you connect and engage with your new supporters ASAP.

We have successfully tested the new tool with Defenders, the terrific environmental protection organization that protects wolves and other wild species and their habitat. I’m proud to say that Defenders has relied on Care2 for many years to mobilize and recruit hundreds of thousands of new Care2 activists and supporters, from among our 14 million “do gooder” members. The many campaigns that we’ve run for Defenders have helped them win major advocacy victories while also substantially growing their base of grassroots donors.

Leatherbound Helps You Compare eBook Prices and Availability

Even as eBook sales soar, the experience of browsing and buying eBooks still leaves a lot to be desired. If you are more interested in a particular title than in your loyalty to a particular eReader, looking for the cheapest version - or even an available version - of a book can be pretty tedious.

Is it even in the iBookstore? Is it cheaper on Amazon's Kindle or on the Barnes & Noble Nook?

Leatherbound addresses that problem by giving users a site where they can look for titles and compare their prices for Kindle, Nook, and iBook. Enter an author name or title, and the site responds with price, availability, and a link to the appropriate eBookstore. Quick and simple.

Leatherbound was created this weekend as part of the Rails Rumble, a programming competition that gives teams 48 hours to build a web app in Ruby on Rails.

Team Leatherbound is comprised of Andrew Dumont, Nathan Carnes, Adrian Pike, and Amiel Martin. Dumont, who is also the Director of Business Development at Seesmic, says that the team has plans down the road to add movies and music to the apps' search capabilities. However, as judging for the Rails Rumble competition is going on now, the project has to stay "as is."

But for a weekend project, Leatherbound's "as is" is pretty good.
