Why Apple Might Release Two iPhones This Fall

A new iPhone is approaching — this, everyone knows. While WWDC came and went without an announcement, this was expected. Instead, this year it will be all about the fall — with new hardware hitting just in time for the formal launch of iOS 5. But what exactly will the new hardware be? An “iPhone 5″ or an “iPhone 4S”? Or, better yet, both?

Apple Stores Are Now Unlocking New AT&T; iPhones (AAPL)

In addition to selling the new unlocked versions of the iPhone 4, Apple can also unlock the AT&T version when it's sold in stores.

According to a tipster at 9 To 5 Mac, Apple Store employees have been instructed they an unlock AT&T iPhones by ringing them up as "Device Only" in the system.

Even though the phones carry the SKU for AT&T devices, you'll still have to pay full price if you decide to buy it unlocked. ($650 for 16 GB and $750 for 32 GB.)

Unlocked iPhones will allow you to insert a SIM card from any GSM carrier (such as T-Mobile and others around the world) and operate it on those networks instead of AT&T.

iPhones May Be Getting Voice Control After All (AAPL)

One of the biggest features we were hoping for in iOS 5 was better voice control, thanks to Apple's partnership with Nuance.

According to one developer, that may actually happen by the  time iOS 5 launches this fall.

References to Nuance have been found buried in iOS 5's code and the tech blogger Chronic Wire was able to snag a few screenshots and post them to his Twitter account.

Other screenshots show an option to add a "microphone" icon to your keyboard for dictating text, just like Android phones can do now.

As developers keep digging, expect several more iOS 5 Easter eggs to come.

Report: Nearly Twice As Many Androids Shipped Last Quarter As iPhones

In a report that is raising eyebrows this morning, UK-based market research firm Canalys estimates that total shipments of Android phones in the U.S. during the third quarter were nearly twice as large as iPhone shipments. Out of 20.9 million smartphones shipped in the U.S., about 44 percent, or 9.1 million, are running the Android OS. Apple, shipped an estimated 5.5 million phones, or 26 percent of the total. Apple ships only one phone, the iPhone. And it became the single largest smartphone in the U.S., surpassing all Blackberry phones combined (with RIM shipping an estimated 5.1 million phones, or 24 percent). Apple's market share in the U.S. jumped 4.5 percent from the second quarter, but the collective share of all the Android handsets now on the market jumped by nearly 10 percent (from 34 percent).
