Groupon's REAL Revenue Last Quarter Was Not $645 Million

There has been a consistent error in the reporting on Groupon's financial performance: Its real revenue is nothing like the number that's tossed around by most news organizations (including us).

Conor Sen at Minyanville points out that Groupon's often cited $645 million in revenue for the first three months of this year is gross revenue. As in, that's all the money Groupon takes in from deals.

Of that, it keeps $270 million, which is Groupon's net revenue number.

So, Groupon's net revenue for the year will be something like $1.2 billion or more. Still impressive, but considerably less than what people are expecting.

CHART OF THE DAY: Who Bought And Sold Apple Shares Last Quarter (AAPL)

We took a look at data on Bloomberg about who was buying and selling shares of Apple in Q1, after seeing some tweets from SAI commenter/contributor Sammy The Walrus IV.

Apple's biggest shareholder, Fidelity, dumped a fairly large amount of stock, ~1.9 million shares. Capital Research Group loaded up on Apple's stock buying 3.7 million shares, which is a 50% increase in its Apple shares.

KIN ONE and TWO Returning to Verizon this Quarter

According to repports, Microsoft's short-lived Kin One and Kin Two are coming back for an encore performance on Verizon, possibly as soon as this quarter, -- will be called the KIN ONEm and KIN TWOm.

Report: Nearly Twice As Many Androids Shipped Last Quarter As iPhones

In a report that is raising eyebrows this morning, UK-based market research firm Canalys estimates that total shipments of Android phones in the U.S. during the third quarter were nearly twice as large as iPhone shipments. Out of 20.9 million smartphones shipped in the U.S., about 44 percent, or 9.1 million, are running the Android OS. Apple, shipped an estimated 5.5 million phones, or 26 percent of the total. Apple ships only one phone, the iPhone. And it became the single largest smartphone in the U.S., surpassing all Blackberry phones combined (with RIM shipping an estimated 5.1 million phones, or 24 percent). Apple's market share in the U.S. jumped 4.5 percent from the second quarter, but the collective share of all the Android handsets now on the market jumped by nearly 10 percent (from 34 percent).

IAC Shows Signs Of Life In Third Quarter, Revenues Jump 25 Percent

Barry Diller realizes that his Ask search engine isn't going to gain market share anytime soon, but search can still power growth for IAC if it just keeps up with the growth in the overall search market. IAC released third quarter earnings this morning. Total revenues were up 25 percent to $422 million. Operating income quadrupled to $36 million, and adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.32 versus Wall Street estimates of $0.27. (However, after stripping out the adjustments due to one-time sales of stock and other assets a year ago, net income was actually down 19 percent). Search represented nearly half of revenues ($205 million). The search business grew 20 percent, goosed primarily by a 55 percent increase in active toolbars to 97 million. IAC's toolbar business is its secret distribution weapon, but those searches tend to generate lower revenue per query than those on Ask.com, which itself is still growing and is now ranked as the sixth largest website in the U.S. LAst month, Ask CityGrid Media's new local advertising network also contributed to overall search revenues.
