Third Yahoo M&A; Boss Quits In Two Years (YHOO)

carol bartz

Yahoo's head of M&A, Taylor Barada, is leaving for Zynga, Kara Swisher at All Things D reports.

This is the second head of M&A Yahoo has lost in the last year. Previously, Andrew Siegel left Yahoo to move back to his family in New York and work for Conde Nast parent company Advance Publications.

Prior to Siegel, Yahoo's M&A boss was Greg Mrva. He left in the fall of 2009.

Leading M&A at Yahoo isn't the best job in the world right now. It can't spend big bucks on sexy acquisitions, and it has trouble convincing companies to join Yahoo.

For instance, Yahoo couldn't close the deal on buying Foursquare last year. It also rejected by Groupon after making a low ball offer.

On the plus side ... Yahoo is about to dump Yahoo Japan, so it might have a pile of cash to play with for whoever takes over the M&A gig.

THE GOOGLE INVESTOR: Google Slides To Third Place In Ad Sales In China (GOOG)

The Google Investor is a daily report from SAI. Sign up here to receive it by email

Eric SchmidtGOOG Trading Sideways With Tech
Stocks are mixed as the market vacillates on the drop in jobless claims. Shares of GOOG are trading sideways with NASDAQ. Upcoming catalysts include continued Android growth; regaining momentum in China; adoption of and media partnerships for Google TV; and progress in other newer initiatives (location-based services and mapping, gaming, social, etc.). The stock trades at approximately 15x Enterprise Value / EBIT, inexpensive relative to historical trading levels and the broader Internet group.

Google Gunning For Android On Nokia Phones Says Andy Rubin (ComputerWorld)

Andy Rubin, vice president of Google's mobile platforms, said that he's hopeful that Nokia, the global mobile phone leader, will decide to adopt the Android platform. Analysts have expressed continuing concerns about Nokia's abysmal smartphone performance in the U.S., and are hoping that the company's recently appointed top leadership can change the downward trend. That would be a huge win for Google.

Google Dominates Mobile Search According To IDC (All Things Digital)

The mobile advertising market is ballooning, as is Google’s share of it. Of the $877 million spent on mobile advertising in the United States this year, 59% of it went to Google, according to IDC. Meanwhile, Apple claimed just 8.4% share, Yahoo 5.6% and Microsoft 4.3%. Clearly, Google rules the mobile ad market in the States in much the same way it dominates search. The mobile ad market, as defined by IDC, includes both search and display ads. The advertising business of some of the companies figuring in IDC’s report don’t extend to mobile search.

Alibaba Now Second In China Online Ad Sales, Pushing Google To Third (Bloomberg)

Google, which shut its search engine service in China this year after a censorship dispute with regulators, slipped to third place behind Alibaba in online advertising sales in the world’s biggest Internet market, according to Analysys International research firm. Alibaba accounted for 9.3% of China’s online ad sales in the third-quarter, rising from 7.8% in the prior quarter. That ranks the company behind only Baidu, after Google’s market share fell to 8.9% from 10.8%.

Money Manager Can't Believe How Inexpensive Google Is (Forbes)

Kenneth Hackel, founder and president of CT Capital, believes Google (one of his buy list stocks), is inexpensive. Google has and continues to be able to generate massive amounts of free cash flow both from revenue growth (new products and services), acquisitions, and improvements to operations. Contrary to his take on IBM.

Google Crying Foul Play In Microsoft's USDA Win (Reuters)

Google didn't get the chance to formally compete for the largest federal government "cloud computing" deal yet struck, according to the search giant. Microsoft announced that the company had won the USDA contract. This adds to concerns that government agencies are unfairly favoring rival Microsoft. How the times have changed. Last decade Microsoft couldn't get away from anti-trust scrutiny.

Make Slashgeo Known to the Community Day - Third Year! + Slashgeo on Facebook and Twitter

I haven't forgot! Two years ago we had the audacity of identifying November 13th as the "Make Slashgeo Known to the Community Day".

Before I serve you the same ramblings than last year, let me remind you of our 5-years anniversary and unavoidable statistics. And the good news is we finally are running on a modern engine... now just little more time is required to squeeze the best out of it. We're slowly getting there.

I can't believe I took a few minutes to build a Facebook page for Slashgeo.org! Don't hesitate to "like" this page, even if it is mostly empty at the moment. I also have a Slashgeo Twitter account (which is more of a personal account), and no, you won't get our usual aggregated geonews stories from that source, our RSS feed is there for this purpose. Among the creation of our Facebook page, I found out someone already "stole" the "/Slashgeo" page on that social network. Strange. Maybe even stranger, is the Slashgeo account on YouTube, used by nothing less than a group of spanish singers! :-) Life can be surprising... well, it has already been 4 years that Slashgeo.org's dot-com counterpart started serving p0rn! :-)

So, here's what the "MSKC Day" is all about: "It's November 13th again! Your mission is the same and still very simple: if you like the site and find it useful, you must tell one of your colleagues about Slashgeo.org.
[...]

As I said last year, our small team of volunteers provides this geonews aggregation service for a community we love and we want to make sure people who might benefit from it actually know that it exists! It takes only a minute to send an email and fulfill your mission :-) (with enough missions accomplished, you'll gain experience and levels and be able to develop new geospatial skills ;-)"

IAC Shows Signs Of Life In Third Quarter, Revenues Jump 25 Percent

Barry Diller realizes that his Ask search engine isn't going to gain market share anytime soon, but search can still power growth for IAC if it just keeps up with the growth in the overall search market. IAC released third quarter earnings this morning. Total revenues were up 25 percent to $422 million. Operating income quadrupled to $36 million, and adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.32 versus Wall Street estimates of $0.27. (However, after stripping out the adjustments due to one-time sales of stock and other assets a year ago, net income was actually down 19 percent). Search represented nearly half of revenues ($205 million). The search business grew 20 percent, goosed primarily by a 55 percent increase in active toolbars to 97 million. IAC's toolbar business is its secret distribution weapon, but those searches tend to generate lower revenue per query than those on Ask.com, which itself is still growing and is now ranked as the sixth largest website in the U.S. LAst month, Ask CityGrid Media's new local advertising network also contributed to overall search revenues.

Facebook Apps Leaking User Info to Third Parties

Updated: Some of the most popular Facebook apps — including games such as Zynga’s Farmville, which has almost 60 million monthly users — have been routinely transmitting information about Facebook users to third parties, including companies such as Rapleaf that are building profiles for sale to advertisers and marketers, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. Facebook told the newspaper that it is planning to introduce new systems that will make it harder for apps to send user data to other companies, something that is a breach of Facebook’s terms of use.
