Here's Everything We Know About Amazon's Secret Tablet So Far (AMZN)

superman bezos

Jeff Bezos and company are doing a good job keeping the details on Amazon's new tablet, expected later this year, under the tightest of wraps.

Very, very little is out there about it right now, but we've gathered what we can for you here.

Bezos even plays games with the press when they ask him about it.

"Stay tuned," he says.

It's all but confirmed that it will run on the Android operating system.

There will be two tablets available -- a smaller one called Coyote and a larger one called Hollywood.

The smaller one will likely replace the Kindle and the larger one will compete with the iPad 2.

Amazon Has Plans To Offer Free Streaming Movies On Its Secret Tablets (AMZN)

Jeff Bezo Amazon Tablet

It has been awhile since we've heard anything about Amazon's impending tablets, so here's some good news.

Barron's reports one of the tablets will have access to a streaming movie service, which will be free for the first batch of tablet owners.

This is another great move by Amazon. Android tablets still don't have access to a robust video library like the iPad does. Right now, the Motorola Xoom is the only tablet that has access to the Android Market's streaming service.

Amazon's Instant Video service already has a selection that rivals Apple's, so it makes sense to add it to its new tablets as well.

Now we know why one of the tablets is codenamed "Hollywood."

REVEALED: Amazon's Secret Groupon-Killer Is Live, And It's Not What You'd Expect (AMZN)

Amazon quietly rolled out a daily deals service in Boise, Idaho called Amazon Local, but thankfully TheNextWeb caught on.

At first, it looks like a straight daily deals site by Amazon in the mould of Groupon: the deal today is 50% off ice cream and shakes at a local store.

But it's not. The deal actually comes from LivingSocial, which counts Amazon among its big investors, and it seems that what Amazon Local is doing is actually aggregating deals from other companies. Right now it's just LivingSocial but there's no reason why it wouldn't include other players. There's also a sweetener for using Amazon Local in the form of Visa reward points.

This looks like an experiment by Amazon more than anything else at this point, but it's a smart one.

The daily deals market is huge and Amazon needs to be there. At the same time, it's a bit difficult to tackle. It requires a huge sales force and a presence in every state. It poses serious tax issues for Amazon. And daily deals are as much about advertising as they are about commerce, and does Amazon really want to tackle Google and Yelp and Foursquare in local advertising?

So the aggregation route, like investing in LivingSocial, is a smart way to get intelligence, relationships, and of course money, in a huge fast-growing space without having to go all-in.

We look forward to seeing whether/how Amazon rolls this out more widely. We're also curious what our friends at Yipit think about having Jeff Bezos as their new competitor.

Comment on The Secret to The Heist’s Success by Tim

I found it disingenuous that it wasn't mentioned at all. It doesn't mean that the game is not good and doesn't deserve to be at the top of the chart, but the truth is that the major reason it jumped to the top of the chart in just a few hours is the audience they gathered over the years. (which was hard work…) Would it have reached the top of the charts without their audience? Honestly, I doubt it: even if the game is very well done, the games are not original enough to please a wide enough audience over time. To be clear: the success is not undeserved. But writing a post on the secret of the success without really mentioning the effect of their audience is not serious.
