New York City with Little Kids

Vacations are not what they used to be. I spent the July 4th weekend in New York City, my first trip there with kids in tow, and it really hit home for me: I’m a parent.

New York City Is Doomed

bloomberg block

STARTUP 2011 -- Marc Cenedella, the CEO and founder of The Ladders, the job site for people looking to make over $100,000, did something few New Yorkers do -- but should -- he took a look at the city's budget summary.

After looking at it, he had a really gloomy take away: "We decreased the number of employees we have, but almost doubled our costs, over the past decade.  This way lay bankruptcy, now or in the future."

We pulled Cenedella aside at the SAI Startup 2011 conference to find out what's going on with New York's budget and how worried we should be.

Marc Cenedella is CEO of TheLadders. Prior to founding TheLadders.com, Marc was a senior vice president at HotJobs.com. Previously, Marc was an associate vice president at The Riverside Company, a New York-based private equity firm.

Paris “The City of Love” Now in 3D in Google Earth

To foreigners, Paris is the "city of love". To Parisians, it's the "city of lights" (La Ville-Lumière). Today, Paris is the "city in 3D" on Google Earth. "Often considered one of the top destinations for world travelers, Paris is known for landmarks like the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Arc de Triomphe, world-famous museums like [...]

Family Travel: Kid-Friendly Holidays in New York City

Associate Editor Susan O'Keefe is just back from a holiday visit to New York with her family.

Photo: Citi PondAre you in the holiday spirit? If you're like me, it usually takes a fresh sprinkle of snow, a festive party, and a tree trimming. This year, I attempted to get a head start on the feelings of comfort and joy with a trip to New York City the morning after Thanksgiving. With three kids in tow, our ambitious itinerary included several of the city's top attractions sprinkled with kid-friendly stops to keep it fun.

Lady Liberty

After being in the car for a few hours driving up I-95, we made our first stop the Statue of Liberty, where we could walk around and get a dose of history (we try and sneak it in any chance we get with the kids). The ferry ride is exhilarating and the cityscape views with Lady Liberty in the distance were sites to behold. Ellis Island was our next stop to view exhibits that shed light on the millions of immigrants who traveled to the New World. The kids searched their ancestors in a database and listened to an audio tour that provides the experience of being a "new arrival."

Why New York City and Austin are Great Places for Tech Jobs

ABC News recently reported the unsurprising fact that Austin and New York City are good places to strive for a successful tech career. Didn't we already know that? Yes, but there's a little more to the story.

The news in Austin is that it has a remarkably low unemployment rate: 6.7 percent. And housing costs there are 16 percent below the national average. Plus, the city has a great tech environment.

There is plenty of high-tech talent in Austin, from engineers to marketers to executives," said Kenneth Cho, co-founder of Spredfast, an Austin-based start-up that helps companies and organizations fully capitalize on social media outlets. "The University of Texas has a lot of young talent who are willing to take a lower salary to stay in Austin."  Cho, who received his MBA from UT, added that Austin is a great place to stay and raise a family, with nationally accredited schools, lower living costs and a highly educated population. According to the city's chamber of commerce, 38 percent of the 6 million people who live in the greater Austin area have a bachelor's degree. That's more than twice the national rate of 15.5 percent who hold bachelor's degree, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In New York, new media is trending.

"There is a feeling of momentum here," said Andres Glusman, vice president of strategy and community for Meetup. "There's never been a better time for the technology sector in New York City than right now." Some believe the rising tide of new media technology in New York City may be attributed to the decline of traditional information gathering, such as reading the newspaper. As technology advances in every sector, industries are looking for alternate means to reach goals (via mediums such as Meetup and other social online constructs), which makes room for the city's bevy of new media companies. "At this point, we are looking for new ways to consume and distribute information," said Marilyn Byrd, of executive recruitment firm Byrd Associates in Manhattan. Byrd has recruited talent for iVillage, Beliefnet and Everyday Health.

The lesson here is to make sure to look at the totality of the environment when you want to find the right place to live, work and flourish. Cost of living, companies in the area, the liveliness of the tech community and overall "vibe" of an area should be deciding factors.
